We have 9 games across the NHL tonight, all being broadcast on ESPN+ so there should be plenty of edges to find on this hockey slate. Check out all of our Expert NHL Picks here, but in this piece, we will be breaking down a Western Conference matchup, as two Central Division foes face off. The Nashville Predators host the Dallas Stars, both teams beginning their NHL season tonight.
The Stars won the Central last year while the Predators snuck into the playoffs, but lasted just one series to the Canucks. Dallas made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals before losing to eventual Stanley Cup Runner Ups, the Edmonton Oilers. Both squads will be looking to get back into the playoffs, and one team in particular made some major offseason acquisitions to chase the Cup this year.
Nashville added Center Steven Stamkos, RW Jonathan Marchessault, and Defenseman Brady Skjei prior to this season, boosting their entire team. Marchessault had 69 points (nice) last regular season, but just 4 points in the postseason for the Knights. Stammer might be getting up their in age, but veteran leadership is always good for a contender. He had 81 points last season on 40 goals and 41 assists, and scored 5 goals in just 5 postseason contests with Tampa Bay. Skjei will pair up dangerously with Roman Josi on the Top defense line for the Preds. Skjei only netted 13 goals last year but he added 34 assists for 47 total points. Alongside with Josi who had 23 goals and 62 assists, they could be the best attacking defensemen in the league.
But, will all the new pieces come out firing on the first night at home? Or will the Stars come into Nashville and upset the Predators to start their season?

Can the Stars Pull Off Road Win to Start Season?
While last season doesn’t matter too much with the new rosters, these teams played some interesting games. They split the season series, winning two games a piece. Both teams had a 1 goal win and a blowout win as well, and ironically, the home team never won.
- 12/23: Stars 3-2 Win @ NSH
- 1/6: Preds 4-3 Win @ DAL
- 1/12: Preds 6-3 Win @ DAL
- 2/15: Stars 9-2 Win @ NSH
Will things change tonight?
The Stars will always have Jake Oettinger in net, which certainly helps their cause. He posted a 2.72 GA/G last year, saving over 90.5% of shots faced, plus the Dallas defense already does a good job of not allowing very many per game. Not only did they block nearly 15 shots per game, they kept Oettinger from facing 30 most contests, ranking Top 8 in both categories across the league. While the Top 2 lines for both teams are very star studded, I do think Dallas is slightly deeper, but I would lean with the Predators defense. Goaltending probably has to go to the Stars as well, however Juuse Saros stats were nearly equal with Oettinger’s last year.
Ultimately, I lean with the under, even though both of these offenses could be electric. But at plus money, I’ve got to back the home team.
Dallas Stars vs Nashville Predators Best Bets
Stars vs Predators Prediction: Predators Win 3-2 (+1100)
Best Bets: Predators ML (+101) BetOnline
Look, I’m not just making this pick to suck up to my boss. I truly believe in the Predators this season. Adding Marchy, Stammer and Skjei immediately moves Nashville’s ceiling from a playoff team to a legit contender. All of those guys are impact players, they’ve been to the playoffs, and two have hoisted the Stanley Cup. They are more than ready and capable of turning this team into Champions.
Tonight at home, I see them getting a huge emotional win. Nashville hasn’t beaten Dallas at home since March of 2022. It’s been two and a half years since the fans saw them take down this Central Division rival, and with a new era of Predators hockey getting started, this is a statement game for the home team. Like I said, I lean with the under, but I like the Preds to find a way to win just a little bit more.
Also, if you fancy a little SGP for this contest:
- Predators ML (+101)
- Under 6.5
- Jonathan Marchessault Over 0.5 Point (-118)
