See Picks & Statistics For The GameThe Florida Panthers will host Game 5 against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night. Florida has just tied the series at 2-2 after an overtime victory on the road Monday night.
Carter Verhaeghe was the hero in overtime, scoring less than five minutes into the extra frame. However, the savior for Florida was actually Sam Reinhart. Without his goal with 2 minutes to go in the third period, the game wouldn’t have even seen overtime.
Florida tightened up on defense in Game 4. They only allowed 16 shots on goal and only 2 found the back of the net. They also killed off 4 of 5 power plays for Washington and kept the Capitals fans quiet.
The Panthers undoubtedly carry momentum back home after escaping Washington in a 2-2 series tie. They avoided the dreaded 3-1 series deficit and have a chance to pull ahead in the series for the first time.
With all of their momentum and home ice advantage, Florida is the odds on favorite to win Game 5 and take the series lead. However, Washington is still poised and looking for the massive first round upset.

Panthers to Use Momentum in Game 5
The Panthers have won 12 of their last 13 games at home following a win on the road. They have used their momentum all season to their advantage by taking big wins away from home and following up with impressive performances in their own building.
Heading into Game 5, this is no different. The Panthers had to be careful in Game 4 already down 2-1 in the series. They answered the call and came up with a big overtime win to even the series at 2-2.
This means that they retain home ice advantage for the remainder of the first round and will only have to travel to Washington once more. They can focus on improving their game and keeping their defense intact in the place they are most familiar with.
In Game 4, the Panthers showed a side of themselves that they had struggled to show all series long. They played excellent defense and held scoring chances to a minimum.
One concern for the Cats is their ability to score when it is 5-on-5. Both goals in Game 4 were scored when there were odd man formations on the ice. The first coming when it was 4-on-4, and the second was scored with the goalie pulled and an extra attacker on the ice.
If they can find their groove when everyone is out on the ice, look out! They are usually deadly in fast-paced situations, and they can strike at a moment’s notice. They will need to improve their power play as well. It currently sits at 0 for 13 for the series, including an 0 for 4 showing in Game 4.
I expect a close game this Wednesday night. I also expect Florida to use their skills and home ice advantage to get the upper hand on the Capitals in Game 5. Neither team has won twice in a row during the series, and I don’t expect that to start now.
Capitals vs. Panthers Prediction and Best Bets
Capitals vs. Panthers Prediction: Panthers 4, Capitals 2
Capitals vs. Panthers Best Bets: Panthers -1.5 (+110 on Bovada Sportsbook and BetUS) and Under 6.5 total goals (+104 on BetOnline Sportsbook)
The teams have combined for 6 goals or less in 3 of their 4 meetings in the postseason. With the Panthers finding their groove on defense and the solid goaltending on both ends, I expect a lower score Wednesday.
The Panthers have what it takes to win by 2 on Wednesday. Even if it requires an empty net goal late, I can’t overlook the value that the spread provides.
