Blues vs Blackhawks NHL Winter Classic Predictions & Picks (12/31)
This year’s Winter Classic will be played between two franchises who aren’t strangers to some outdoor hockey.
After all, the Blackhawks will be making a league-leading seventh outdoor appearance this afternoon. The record number of appearances doesn’t equate to positive results, though, as the Blackhawks are only 1-5 SU in those games, most recently falling 4-2 to the Boston Bruins at Notre Dame Stadium in 2019.
Meanwhile, the Blues went 2-0 SU in their two previous outdoor appearances. They last emerged victorious in a 6-4 win over the Minnesota Wild during the Winter Classic at Target Field in 2022, made possible by Jordan Kyrou’s NHL historic four-point performance (2 goals, 2 assists).
When it comes to the history between these franchises, the Central Division rivals have only previously met once for a Winter Classic collision. That showdown took place in 2017 when the Blues picked up a 4-1 win against the Blackhawks at Busch Stadium.
The Blues won their first (and only) previous Winter Classic meeting with the Blackhawks. Will history repeat itself today?
As far as the present day goes, the Blues have owned the Blackhawks’ number more often than not lately. In the last 16 clashes between these division rivals, St. Louis has picked up a whopping 13 victories.
Although none of those wins took place this season, that trend has a good shot at continuing based on Chicago’s current slump. Not only have the Blackhawks dropped 11 of their last 15 games before today’s action, but they’ve also been outscored 21-10 amid their present four-game losing streak.
The Blues aren’t perfect and just fell 4-2 to the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday, but they’ve still won two of their last three games. That’s without mentioning how they’re 4-1 SU across their last five visits to Chicago, proving that enemy territory doesn’t negatively impact them.
St. Louis will try to extend that trend with Jordan Binnington between the pipes. The veteran goaltender’s recent performances have been all over the place lately as he’s played to a 2-5-1 record, 3.07 goals-against average, .886 save percentage, and one shutout in eight December starts. At the same time, he’s 1-0 at the Winter Classic.
Conversely, Blackhawks G Petr Mrazek hasn’t been doing too hot either. The 32-year-old puck-stopper hasn’t tasted victory since Nov. 27, going 0-5-0 with a .844 SV% and 4.74 GAA in his last six appearances.
Will Blackhawks G Petr Mrazek turn his play around to lead his team to victory?
Betting against the Blackhawks is rarely a bad idea, hence why you should bet on the Blues to win the Winter Classic. St. Louis is perfect in an outdoor setting and I expect that to remain the same against a Chicago club that is stuck in its umpteenth rut this season.
Take the Blues on the moneyline as they send thousands of Blackhawks fans home disappointed, even if it isn’t the prettiest performance.

Best Blues vs Blackhawks NHL Player Prop Bet (12/31)
With it being the NHL Winter Classic, how can we not go with a Jordan Kyrou anytime goal (+165 on Bovada) for the best Blues vs. Blackhawks player prop bet?
After scoring 30-plus goals in back-to-back seasons, Kyrou is up to his usual antics this year. The former NHL All-Star has racked up 15 goals in 38 games, putting him on pace for 32 if he doesn’t miss another game. Six of those goals came within his last 10 games, which includes goals against each of his last four Western Conference opponents.
I’d bet that Kyrou is salivating at the thought of facing Chicago today. On top of scoring nine goals in his last 10 games against the Blackhawks, the Toronto, ON native registered two-goal performances in the last two meetings.
With the Blackhawks surrendering an average of 5.3 goals in their last four games, Kyrou should see plenty of opportunities to find the back of the net again.
Best Blues vs. Blackhawks Player Prop Bet: Jordan Kyrou Anytime Goal (+165)
