The Lightning are still alive after a nail-biting Game 5 victory on the road. The odds were stacked against the two-time defending champs, but they got it done to force a Game 6 in Tampa Bay on Sunday night.
Game 5 was tied at 2-2 with 6:22 remaining in the 3rd period when Ondrej Palat scored his 11th goal of the playoffs to give Tampa the lead. Colorado was fierce in their response, but came up empty trying to get one past Andrei Vasilevskiy.
The loss was only the 4th for the Avalanche this postseason. They outshot the Lightning 37-29, but ultimately couldn’t find a good enough scoring chance to beat the Lightning goaltender.
Tampa Bay can celebrate for now, but they still have a steep hill to climb down 3-2 in the series. It all starts with Game 6 in front of their home fans. Will the Lightning force a Game 7?

The Trends Through 5 Games
- The home team has won 3 of 5 games
- Home teams have outscored away teams 21-11
- The Over has hit in 3 of 5 games
- 2 of 5 games have gone into overtime
- The betting favorite has won 3 of 5 games
It’s no surprise to see the home teams having success in this series. Both teams have fantastic home records throughout the playoffs. It carried into this series, and it’s paying off for Colorado, as they have taken 2 of 3 at home. For Tampa, they are 1 for 2 and get their third chance on Sunday night.
The games are close, with 3 of the 5 being decided by a goal so far. Two of the games have gone to overtime, with Colorado winning on both occasions. The Avalanche have played in 6 overtime games this postseason and have a 5-1 record. The Lightning have only played in 3 overtime games, two of which came in this series. They are 1-2.
When betting on these two teams, it can feel like a toss up. According to the trends, if there is any doubt, bet the favorite. It’s been a theme in these playoffs with the favorites winning more games then the underdogs. However, this series has seen a close line, so be careful heading into Game 6, as the teams are separated by very little.
Heading into Tampa Bay on Sunday, bets will be placed on both teams, as the series has been fairly even so far. The close finishes and even goals have helped to put a question mark on the betting slip. Colorado is only outscoring Tampa 18-14 in the Final.
If betting a moneyline or spread is too difficult, focus on the Over/Under in Game 6. Once again, it’s almost even, with the Over hitting in 3 of 5 games. However, over the past two games, the teams combined for 5 goals in each. The goaltenders have warmed up a bit since the start of the series, and it will be a tough task trying to beat them.
Avalanche vs. Lightning Prediction and Best Bets
Avalanche vs. Lightning Prediction: Avalanche 4, Lightning 3
Avalanche vs. Lightning Best Bets: Avalanche on the moneyline (-114 at BetOnline)
It may not be a surprise to see the Avalanche as the best pick, but here’s why. They have not lost two games in a row during the postseason, and they have battled through injuries to record a 15-4 record so far.
The Avs have been the favorite in every game, but not by much. The games are close, but in the close ones, they seem to be able to apply more pressure to keep the opposition on their heels. If they can continue to outshoot Tampa, Colorado will raise the Cup on the road in Game 6.
