The Avalanche have been off for nearly a week after disposing of the Winnipeg Jets in five games. Meanwhile, the Stars haven’t had nearly as much time to rest after needing all seven games to eliminate the Vegas Golden Knights in Round 1.
Will Colorado capitalize on its extra rest to win tonight? Or will Dallas find a way to keep its momentum growing at home?
Let’s discuss tonight’s potential outcome and the game’s best NHL betting opportunities by diving into my Avalanche vs. Stars Game 1 predictions and picks.

Avalanche vs Stars NHL Game 1 Predictions & Pick (5/7)
Due to their being Central Division rivals, the Avalanche and Stars aren’t exactly strangers. The two clubs collided four times throughout the 2023-24 regular season, resulting in a trio of victories for the Avs as they outscored the Stars 20-15 on aggregate. Having said that, it was Dallas that notched a 7-4 victory at Ball Arena when these teams last met on April 7.
It’s been a while since these teams met in the playoffs, though. They last met in the second round of the 2019-20 postseason as the Avalanche advanced past the Stars in seven games, improving its postseason record against the latter to 18-14 SU.
Dallas does have the home-ice advantage this time around, but it might not be enough to get the job done. Even though the Stars have played well at American Airlines Center this season, it’s only won two of its last seven home games against the Avalanche. That includes going 0-2 SU at home against Colorado during the regular season while allowing at least five goals in each outing.
The Stars must find a way to finally beat the Avalanche at home if they want to win this series.
Playing divisional rivals also tends to bring out the best in the Avalanche, who are 15-4 SU in their last 19 Central Division tilts. Additionally, Colorado is 7-9 ATS (43.8%) against the division on the road whereas Dallas is 4-9 ATS (30.8%) against Central teams at home.
The one thing that the Stars do have going for them is a slight special teams advantage. While the Avalanche’s penalty kill was slightly better than the Stars in Round 1 (76.9% vs. 75.0%), it was Colorado that boasted the second-worst power-play success rate (11.1%) whereas Dallas converted on 30.8% of its man-advantage opportunities.
Time will tell which version of Alexandar Georgiev shows up for the Avalanche tonight. While he’s more than capable of stealing games, the Russian netminder’s 3.03 goals-against average and .893 save percentage in the opening round was far from his best work.
As for the Stars, Jake Oettinger cemented himself as one of the NHL’s best goalies in his performance against the Golden Knights. He was on his game more often than not, backstopping his way to a 1.95 GAA and .925 SV%.
The Avalanche wouldn’t mind if G Alexander Georgiev played more consistently.
In a game that could go either way, I’m backing the Stars to stand tall. Their defense and goaltending were phenomenal in Round 1 and playing at home will only elevate that. Yes, the Avalanche do have the rest advantage, but that might not be a good thing given that teams can sometimes look sluggish following a lengthy break. I see Dallas taking advantage of that fact en route to a win.
With that in mind, let’s keep things simple by sticking with an outright Stars victory.

Best Avalanche vs Stars NHL Game 1 Player Prop (5/7)
After his amazing first-round performance, I’m taking Wyatt Johnston to record over 0.5 points (-148) for my favorite Avalanche vs. Stars prop.
Johnston was one of the Stars’ best players in the opening series, pacing his teammates with seven points in as many games. The 20-year-old sniper was only held pointless in two of the five games, which included going 3-1 on this prop on home ice.
The Avalanche are a tough team to face, but Johnston did record a three-point effort against them exactly one month ago. With that in mind, don’t hesitate to back this prop pick tonight.
