The Avalanche face a quick turnaround after falling 2-1 to the New York Rangers in overtime last night. Meanwhile, the Devils hope for better times after losing three of their last four games before the All-Star Break.
Despite tasting defeat last night, Colorado is still tied for the second-best 2023-24 Stanley Cup odds (+800), per Bovada’s futures markets, whereas New Jersey is in a three-way tie for 13th (+2800).
This matchup contains a plethora of betting opportunities, so let’s explore some of them inside this Avalanche vs. Devils betting preview.

Avalanche vs Devils Prediction & Pick (2/6): Can Colorado Bounce Back?
Time will tell if the Avalanche can rebound from last night’s disappointing loss. Although Nathan MacKinnon opened the scoring at 18:12 in the first period with his 32nd goal of the season, the Avs couldn’t muster any more offense for the rest of the game as Rangers goaltender Jonathan Quick turned aside 32 of the 33 shots he faced.
Nevertheless, Colorado owns a 2-1 SU record in the second half of back-to-back games this season, outscoring those opponents 11-9 on aggregate.
This game, meanwhile, marks the Devils’ first since the NHL All-Star Break. They’re one of the better teams on paper but haven’t looked that way lately, dropping five of their last seven games. A lack of offensive production is one of the main issues as New Jersey has averaged just 2.71 goals while going 2-for-18 (11.1%) on the power play during that stretch.
It’s tough to imagine the Devils’ PP luck changing too much given that the Avalanche boast the 10th-best penalty kill in the league.
Can the Avalanche take advantage of the Devils’ power play struggles?
Even though the Devils are the home team tonight, Prudential Center hasn’t provided much of an advantage lately. New Jersey lost three of its last four home games before the All-Star Break, allowing at least five goals in three of those outings.
The Avalanche, on the other hand, are 5-3 SU in their last eight road and even scored exactly seven goals in two of the most recent four. Unsurprisingly, Nathan MacKinnon has been Colorado’s best player away from home, registering 32 points in 25 road games. Mikko Rantanen (29) and Cale Makar (27) are right behind him in terms of point production in enemy territory.
Jack Hughes leads the Devils with 21 points at home this season, however, the dynamic forward is still day-to-day with an upper-body injury. For what it’s worth, the Devils are 5-10 SU when Hughes misses a game this season.
The Devils tend to struggle whenever Jack Hughes isn’t in the lineup.
Even though they were in action less than 24 hours ago, the Avalanche are my pick to win. Colorado has fared well on the road this season and has also won 13 of its last 19 encounters with New Jersey. The Devils are playing too inconsistently for my liking and their struggles at home make them tougher to trust. If the Avs can get some early pressure and puck luck going, victory is theirs.
As far as the best bet goes, the Avalanche at -1.5 on the puck line. For starters, the Avs have the second-best offense, meaning the firepower is there to win by multiple goals. Secondly, New Jersey has three multi-goal losses in its last seven games overall as well as two in the last four home outings.
Thirdly, the Avalanche are 6-3 SU in their last nine games against the Devils with each win coming by a multi-goal margin — including a 6-3 victory back in November.
In other words, don’t be surprised if this game isn’t as close as the oddsmakers project.

Best Avalanche vs Devils NHL Player Prop (2/6)
Are you looking for an Avalanche vs. Devils player prop? Consider taking Nathan MacKinnon as an anytime goal scorer.
Nathan MacKinnon's 85th point of the season is the most by an Avalanche/Nordiques player through their first 50 games played in a campaign. 🤯#NHLStats: https://t.co/5KwVUVpmOa pic.twitter.com/StoYxm23Pu

MacKinnon has been phenomenal this season, registering 32 goals through 50 games — putting him on pace for a career-high of 52. The 28-year-old superstar has also found the back of the twine in each of his last five games, amassing nine goals during that stretch.
If that isn’t convincing enough, MacKinnon also has six goals in his last eight games against the Devils, even scoring against them earlier this season. He’s showing no signs of slowing down, so don’t hop off the train just yet.
Best Avalanche vs Devils Prop Bet: Nathan MacKinnon Anytime Goal (-111)
