Avalanche vs Capitals NHL Predictions & Picks (11/21)
It’s the second and final matchup of the 2024-25 NHL season between these inter-conference foes. Their first meeting took place at Ball Arena last Friday as the Capitals notched an impressive 5-2 road win over the Avalanche. Washington’s offensive outburst was led by Connor McMichael, who scored his 11th and 12th goals of the season in the victory.
The performance kickstarted a three-game win streak for the Capitals, who’ve since earned back-to-back wins over the Vegas Golden Knights and Utah Hockey Club. They played well at both ends of the ice in those outings, outscoring their opponents 11-4 on aggregate.
Having said that, the Capitals will be noticeably shorthanded tonight as captain Alexander Ovechkin is week-to-week with a leg injury. Not only was he exceeding expectations with an NHL-leading 15 goals in 18 games, but it’s worth pointing out that the Capitals are only 4-13 SU in the 17 games that Ovechkin has missed since the start of the 2021-22 season.
Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin will likely miss the next few weeks with a lower-body injury.
The Avalanche, meanwhile, responded to the loss to the Capitals with Monday’s 3-2 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers. Colorado has now gone nearly three weeks without suffering consecutive defeats, which includes going 5-2 SU across seven games during that stretch.
Having said that, the Avalanche must figure out how to start scoring in the visiting role. After all, they’ve only scored five goals in their last three away games, playing a big role in the two losses suffered in that span. Conversely, the Capitals are averaging a whopping 4.20 goals per game at home this season, ranking fourth-best in the NHL.
In other words, Avalanche goaltender Justus Annunen likely has a tough test in front of him. While the Finnish netminder stopped 24-of-26 shots in Monday’s win vs. the Flyers, it was his first above-.900 save percentage performance in nearly a month. He’s played to an unimpressive .858 SV% In his last five starts, which includes allowing three goals on six shots to the Caps last week.
As for Washington, Logan Thompson will be making his 10th appearance of the year. The 27-year-old veteran puck-stopper has yet to lose in regulation, going 8-0-1 with a .913 SV% and 2.63 goals-against average thus far.
Will the Avalanche’s skaters be able to solve Capitals G Logan Thompson tonight?
In what should be an evenly-matched tilt, I’m going with an Avalanche victory tonight. The Avs are hungry for revenge after last week’s loss and have the perfect opportunity to catch the Capitals off guard as they try to figure out life without Ovechkin. It’s possible that this could come down to one goal, however, Colorado is a good enough team to pick up a win in enemy territory.
For the best bet, though, I’m going with the Over on the 6.5-goal total. Not only is the Over 5-0 in the Capitals’ last five outings (7.6 goals per game) but seven of the Avalanche’s last 11 games have also seen seven or more total goals scored.
Washington and Colorado have also combined for the Over in each of their last three encounters, including last week’s seven-goal performance. It would be shocking if we don’t see a fair bit of offense tonight.

Best Avalanche vs Capitals NHL Player Prop (11/21)
I’m looking at John Carlson o0.5 points (-117) for tonight’s best Avalanche vs. Capitals NHL player prop bet.
Carlson has done well at generating offense throughout his career as his 689 points rank sixth among defensemen since 2009-10. Even though he’s 34 years old now, the Capitals defender is still finding success with his puck-moving abilities, tallying 14 points in his first 18 outings. He’s picked up at least one point in 12-of-18 contests (66.7%) so far and is heading into tonight’s affair on a three-game point streak.
With at least one point in 11 of his last 13 meetings with the Avs, it’s clear that you can’t go wrong with this Carlson prop bet tonight.
Best Avalanche vs. Capitals Player Prop Bet: John Carlson o0.5 Points (-117)
