Today marks the start of a tradition in the NHL – the Stadium Series. This year we have 2 games, and it kicks off with Philadelphia Flyers (29-19-7) vs the New Jersey Devils (27-22-4) at Metlife Stadium.
The Stadium Series games are played at an outdoor venue, usually a football or baseball field. The home for the New York Football teams will be the host for this year’s event.
Another cool this about these games are the jerseys. Every year, the NHL comes out with designs specifically for these games and they’re pretty cool.
This year’s designs are simple, but clean looking.
Alright, enough catching up on that – let’s get into the game. This will be the 3rd time the Flyers play in the Stadium Series. It’s the 2nd time these 2 teams faceoff this season and Philly snuck out an overtime win by a score of 3-2 in the first game.
Philly has really surprised the league this year with their success. They are currently sitting 3rd in the Metropolitan Division, ahead of the Devils.
The Flyers just had a 4-game winning streak snapped in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Maple Leafs. Although coming in off a loss, Philly has been hot despite being 4-5-1 in their last 10 games.
On the road is where they have found success. With a road record of 15-7-5, the Flyers have no problem playing in someone else’s barn. Today will be different though with the outdoor conditions and neutral ice for both teams.
Can the Devils find ways to win against this hot Flyers team?
This is the Devils 2nd time participating in the Stadium Series. They come into this game off a loss to the Los Angeles Kings after winning their 2 previous games. In their last 10 games, New Jersey is 4-5-1 and is only 12-13-2 at home.
New Jersey ranks in the top of the league for offensive categories. They have no shortage of offense, but can’t get the job done as of late. To win this game, they will need to play a complete game on offense and defense.
Defensively, the Devils struggle. They rank 26th in the league for goals allowed and 18th for penalty kill wit a 79.4% kill rate. One thing they do well is not committing a lot of penalties. Which helps since their PK is not very good.
Goalie Vitek Vanecek is out with a lower body injury, so back up Nico Daws will get the start for New Jersey. He’s 5-6-0 with a 2.93 GAA and .909 save percentage so far this year. He will be tested big time by this Flyers team.
Let’s check out the odds and get into the plays.

As much as I hate this team, I can’t deny that they’re good. The 2 biggest difference makers for this game are defense and goaltending. Philly is much stronger in both areas.
I expect the Devils to get shots on Ersson, but he’s been solid this season. He has also stepped up since called upon after the departure of Carter Hart. New Jersey will have to get crafty to get a few by him.
I expect Philly to come out swinging and get an early lead. They should smother the Devils offense all around and make it a nightmare for them to get the offense going.
The outdoor conditions will play a factor in this game. The ice will not be as nice as an indoor arena, but that’s the whole point. Both teams are going to go out there and compete, but Philly is going to be too much for New Jersey to handle.
