Chargers vs Patriots NFL Week 17 Predictions & Picks (12/28)

It isn’t a secret that Saturday’s action will impact this year’s NFL postseason picture.

The Chargers are currently the AFC’s No. 6 seed and will clinch a playoff berth if they leave Gillette Stadium with a victory this weekend. Although the Patriots were eliminated from postseason contention long ago, the fact that they can still play spoiler could motivate Jerod Mayo’s team to win their penultimate home game.

Having said that, winning is easier said than done when it comes to the Patriots. New England hasn’t tasted victory since Week 10, losing each of its last five outings by an average score of 8.4 points per game.

As for the Chargers, they avoided a third straight defeat with last week’s 34-27 win over the Denver Broncos. It’s been over a month since Los Angeles won consecutive outings, though, leaving time to tell if that trend ends or continues on Saturday afternoon.

The Chargers have gone five consecutive games without tasting back-to-back wins. 

Even though the Patriots have the home-field advantage on paper, that hasn’t meant much lately. After all, the Pats are only 1-5 SU/2-3-1 ATS at Gillette Stadium this season, boasting a minus-5.3 average scoring margin — seventh-worst among home teams in 2024.

A big part of the Patriots’ lack of success at Gillette Stadium is the fact that their offense averages an NFL-worst 15.2 PPG at home. That doesn’t exactly paint a pretty picture against a Chargers team that is not only surrendering a league-low 14.0 PPG on the road but also shut the Patriots out when they traveled to New England last December.

I just don’t see the Patriots being good enough on either side of the ball to win this game. A potential playoff berth should be enough to motivate the Chargers to win while covering the spread in the process. Jim Harbaugh & Co. have covered seven times in their last nine games and will keep that ATS success going against a more-than-beatable Patriots crew.

Chargers vs Patriots NFL Week 17 Player Prop Bet

Look no further than Drake Maye o27.5 rushing yards (-118 on SportsBetting) for the best Chargers vs. Patriots Week 17 player prop bet.

The Patriots selected Maye third overall back in April partly because of his mobility, which has been on full display throughout his rookie campaign. The ex-UNC quarterback is averaging 35.4 rushing yards per game, finishing with the Over on this prop five times in 10 starts — including when he rushed for 30 yards against the Buffalo Bills in Week 16.

That’s without mentioning how the Over is also 3-1 in his first four starts at Gillette Stadium.

Even though the Chargers’ defense shouldn’t be underestimated, they aren’t perfect at defending mobile QBs, allowing the 11th-most rushing yards to the position. Considering how the Patriots are the second-worst team in terms of pass-blocking, per Pro Football Focus, Maye will likely face a ton of pressure that should force him to scramble and pick up ground yardage.

Taking the above into account, Maye shouldn’t have any issues finishing with the Over again this weekend.
