We are so back.
The 104th season of the National Football League kicked off on Thursday night and if that game in Arrowhead was any indication of the season that is to come, we are in for a wild ride.
The Detroit Lions were able to take down the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs, 21-20, even is if was laden with an asterisk (sorry Lions fans, I couldn’t resist), and start the season with exactly what we all wanted.
Drama.

Titans vs Saints Prediction
If you like defensive, hard-nosed football, you are going to love this battle in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon.
Both of these teams could have top 5 defenses by years end and they will be on full display in this game.
The Titans have one of the more underrated front sevens in football and are led by Defensive Tackle Jeffery Simmons.
If you don’t know the name, get familiar. Simmons has the opportunity in his 5th NFL season to become one of the best interior defensive linemen in the NFL is he has a dominant season. And that is within the realm of possibility.
Simmons and the rest of the Titans defense will have the task of slowing down the Saints new signal caller Derek Carr, after his big move from the Raiders in the offseason.
Can Carr get the Saints from A to B?
Derek Carr gets a chance to revive his career, exchanging the Silver and Black of the Raiders and upgrading to the Gold and Black of the Saints.
Carr will try to make sure that the move is indeed an upgrade from Silver to Gold.
The journey begins on Sunday against the Titans and Carr has a chance to pick a part this Titans secondary that is…suspect to say the least.
The Titans allowed THE MOST passing yards in the NFL last season and with only minor upgrades in the secondary, the back end is definitely the biggest question mark for the Two Toned blue.
Derek Carr will surely look to test that area early and often. If Carr can find Wide outs Chris Olave and Michael Thomas in space consistently in this game, it will be a long day for the Titans.
Will the King take over in his Bayou debut?
On the offensive side for the Titans, Running back Derrick Henry will have a chance to take on the Saints for the first time in his career.
The Titans are sure to rely heavily on the All-Prop back, as he is still a dominant force and will be a major factor for the Titan’s offense this season.
But the key to this game and a lot of games for the Titans will be the play of quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
Ryan Tannehill only played 12 games last season due to an ankle injury that ended up requiring offseason surgery.
He is back this season at the helm for the Titans and even though the Titans have drafted not 1 but 2 quarterbacks in the past two NFL Drafts, the Titans best chance to win rests in the capable hands of the 35 year old Tannehill.
In this game, Tannehill will have the chance to show off his chemistry with new Titans signee All Pro Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, which has apparently been VERY good all throughout the offseason.
If the Tannehill can move the ball with precision and consistent success through the air, the Titans offense has the capabilities to be lethal.
Derrick Henry will be Derrick Henry. That is a foregone conclusion at this point.
But the threat of an actual air attack to go with the possible Hall of Fame back is the recipe the Titans need to conjure up.
And I think we see that recipe begin to take shape on Sunday.
Saints vs Titans Best Bet
With new offensive coordinator Tim Kelly calling the shots for the Titans and a fully healthy 53 to start the season, I think the Titans just have a better all out squad to win this game.
I will be taking the points here, and I did see this number at +3 for +100 earlier this week, which I do like better than the +2.5. +3 is now fairly juiced but I am still going to buy the 0.5 point and take the 3 here.
This game could come down to the last possession and I would hate to see a my bet lose by the hook instead of just buying the 0.5 point.
All in all, I think the Titans win outright but give me the points. We are in for a treat down in the Bayou!
Game Pick: Titans +3 (-125) Bovada
Player Prop of the Game
Derrick Henry o18.5 Carries (-107) Bovada
I wrote about this play in my 3 MUST BET Props of Week 1 Piece so go give that a gander.
Here is the jist…
It is no secret that the Titans are going to want to get the big man rolling to start the season and while the Saints do have a stout defense, they struggled against the Run last year.
New Orleans allowed 130.5 yards per game last season, which was 9th worst in the league.
The Titans rushed for 125 yards per game, with most of that damage being done by Henry.
The King does not get off to a blistering pace to start seasons, but he did have 80+ rushing yards in 2 of the first 3 games of the season last year, with 20+ carries in both games.
The Titans are going to want to control the game early and that will mean getting the ball into Henry’s hands 20-25 times throughout the day.
With that in mind, I love the line we are getting on Henry to get those touches and the numbers back it up.
- 19+ carries in 3 of the last 4 Season Openers.
- 19+ carries in 8 of first 10 games last season
- 21 carries in Game 1 last season
Lastly, the Titans are a superb 35-10 when Henry gets 19+ carries. The winning recipe is giving the ball to number 22 and I see that being the recipe this Sunday to start the season.
Derrick Henry o18.5 Carries (-107) Bovada
