Eagles vs Patriots Predictions & NFL Picks Today (8/15)
Both of these teams opened the NFL preseason with victories last week.
The Eagles squeaked out a close-fought 16-13 victory over the Baltimore Ravens as Jake Elliott scored the game-winning field goal just as the final buzzer sounded off. Meanwhile, the Patriots notched a convincing 17-3 win against the Carolina Panthers, highlighted by rookie QB Joe Milton and WR Jaquae Jackson connecting on a 38-yard touchdown pass during the fourth quarter.
The Eagles didn’t play their starters in Week 1 and that’ll probably be the case again tonight. Head coach Nick Sirianni doesn’t want to risk injuries before his team opens the regular season in Brazil, so chances are that we’ll be seeing Philadelphia’s second- and third-string players throughout this matchup.
As for the Patriots, we’re more likely to see their top players. They have a plethora of young players vying for bigger roles, which means HC Jerod Mayo must play them as much as possible if he wants the cream to rise to the top. It’s likely that QBs Drake Maye, Jacoby Brissett, Joe Milton, and Bailey Zappe will all see playing time again.
How will Patriots rookie QB Drake Maye perform in his second NFL preseason game?
The Eagles are also just 5-13 SU in their last 18 meetings against the Patriots. Having said that, it was Philadelphia that emerged with a 25-20 victory when these franchises collided last September.
At the same time, the Eagles have only covered the spread in five of their last 19 preseason games. The Patriots have been much more successful in that regard, going 12-6 ATS across their last 18 exhibition contests. That’s without mentioning how they’re also 14-5 ATS in their last 19 games played on a Thursday.
Taking all of the above into account, I predict a Patriots victory tonight. New England’s roster is filled with more unknowns at the moment, meaning we’ll likely see more key Pats players in action compared to the Eagles. The home-field advantage could also give Mayo’s team an edge.
As for the best bet, we’ll take the Patriots covering the spread. Again, they’ve done a great job at covering the spread in recent preseasons, whereas the Eagles haven’t. Considering how well New England’s defense played last week, I’m expecting more of the same tonight, resulting in more ATS success.
