See Picks & Statistics For The GameOne of the notable matchups on the NFL Week 4 schedule sees Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers follow their big road win over Tom Brady and the Bucs with a matchup with Brady’s former team, the New England Patriots.
While Brady vs. Rodgers was the big storyline for last Sunday’s showdown in Tampa, the big storyline for this week’s game in Green Bay surrounds the health of New England QB Mac Jones.
In Sunday’s 37-26 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Jones reportedly suffered a high left ankle sprain. His availability against Green Bay and beyond has not been confirmed as of yet, but it is widely expected that he will miss multiple games.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick, unsurprisingly, isn’t giving much away, but he did say on Wednesday that if Jones does not start in Green Bay, veteran backup Brian Hoyer will get the start.
Following their visit to Lambeau Field, the Pats have a pretty favorable schedule for the next several weeks, so Jones missing multiple games isn’t necessarily catastrophic, even with New England currently at 1-2.
But when it comes to Sunday’s game in Green Bay, the odds are very much against New England, who is currently Week 4’s biggest underdog by some distance over the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are this week’s second-biggest dog.

Wounded Pats Set for Rare Position in Green Bay
From 2003 to 2019, the Pats lost back-to-back games nine times: 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015 (twice), 2018 (twice), and 2019.
Only once out of those nine times did they lose back-to-back games by double digits. In 2018, their sixth and final Super Bowl-winning season with Brady, they lost 31-20 at Jacksonville in Week 2 then followed it up with a 26-10 loss at Detroit in Week 3.
In their first season PB (post-Brady), New England had losing streaks of four and three games, the latter of which featured all double-digit losses. And last season, they lost back-to-back games twice, with their back-to-back losses to the Colts and Bills in Weeks 15 and 16 coming by double digits.
What does any of this mean? If you have been betting on the NFL for a long time, there might be a temptation to not bet against the Patriots with the spread where it is, even if they are starting a QB who has started two games in the last four-plus seasons.
But while there is certainly a big risk in betting against this team, perhaps more so than any other team, I’m here to tell you that it is perfectly okay to do it.
If this number gets bigger, New England will close as a double-digit dog for the first time since Week 4 in 2020, when they were on the road against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
Their 26-10 loss in Kansas City was Hoyer’s most recent start, and just as the home team covered in that matchup, a similar outcome is likely on Sunday in Green Bay.
Packers Heating Up After Poor Start
After playing poorly in a Week 1 loss at Minnesota, the Packers have tightened up on both sides of the ball, and the Patriots would be in a challenging position even with a healthy Jones, who was picked off three times against the Ravens and hasn’t had a blemish-free game yet.
New England’s defense did well against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2, but they were not up to the task against either the Dolphins or Ravens.
A favorable stretch in the coming weeks will give them an opportunity to correct their issues, with or without Jones, but another tough afternoon looks to be in the cards for the Pats.
