See Picks & Statistics For The GameBetting News has been covering the NFL Week 5 action all week long and there are still several matchups to go. Next up is a showdown between two jungle beasts as the Carolina Panthers go one-on-one with the Detroit Lions on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
The Panthers’ winless start to the campaign continued last week with a 21-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The same can’t be said for the Lions, who are coming off a 34-20 win over the Green Bay Packers backed by RB David Montgomery’s 121-yard, three-touchdown performance.
Will Carolina finally taste victory by pulling off the upset? Or will Detroit add another tally to its win column?
Let’s dive into everything important about the upcoming Panthers vs. Lions matchup, ranging from the latest NFL odds to my betting predictions.

Panthers vs Lions Week 5 Preview
Looking at the recent history of these franchises, things look promising for the road team. After all, the Lions have dropped nine straight games played in October while the Panthers are 8-2 in their last 10 encounters with Detroit.
Unfortunately for Frank Reich’s team, this isn’t the Lions of old.
Dan Campbell has his players buying into his system, resulting in a 3-1 start to the season. Detroit’s success stems from a dangerous offense that averages 26.5 points per game (8th) and 5.7 yards per play (8th).
The run game has been a key part of the Lions’ offensive success and there’s a good chance that will continue at Ford Field this weekend. The Panthers are allowing 136.3 rushing yards per game (27th) and have already surrendered six rushing TDs — tied for fifth-most in the NFL.
The Panthers’ offense, on the other hand, hasn’t exactly produced much. They’re averaging 16.8 PPG (24th) and have been held to 17 or fewer points three times already.
For reference, the Lions have scored no fewer than 20.
Speaking of the home team, Detroit’s defense has also been fantastic. They own the 13th-best scoring defense (20.8 PPG) and just held their last two opponents to a combined 26 points.
The Lions’ defensive line will look to continue its dominance in Week 5. Their opponents have struggled to produce against their frontline, surrendering an NFL-low 60.8 rushing yards per game.
Chances are Detroit’s defenders won’t give Carolina QB Bryce Young much room to breathe. The Lions rank as follows when it comes to:
- Sacks: T-7th (13)
- Pressures: T-2nd (49)
- Hurries: T-4th (22)
- Pressure percentage: 7th (27.7%)
Given that Young has already been sacked 11 times while facing pressure on 25.8% of dropbacks, things could get ugly if the Panthers can’t do a better job of protecting their QB.
Panthers vs Lions Prediction — Week 5
Nothing about the Panthers’ play so far indicates that they can compete with a playoff-bound team like the Lions. Detroit is better on both sides of the ball than Carolina and shouldn’t have an issue walking out of Ford Field with a win.
Hell, the Lions may wind up covering as 10-point favorites given that the Panthers lost all four of their previous games by an average of 8.8 points.
Prediction: Lions 28, Panthers 16
Bet: Lions -9.5 (-115 on Bovada)
Panthers vs Lions Player Prop — Week 5
As for a Panthers vs. Lions player prop, how can we not go with a David Montgomery anytime touchdown?
The former Iowa State product is on a scoring terror to begin the 2023 campaign, finding the end zone in each of his three appearances for a total of five TDs. He’ll likely feast against the Panthers, who’ve allowed the third-most rushing yards and second-most rushing TDs to running backs.
With how easily the Lions move down the field, Montgomery will see plenty of chances to score.
Bet: David Montgomery Anytime Touchdown (Odds TBD)
