Panthers vs Falcons Week 1 Game Preview
The NFC South was the NFL’s weakest division in 2022 as all four teams finished with sub.-500 records. Both the Panthers and Falcons ended the year with identical 7-10 records, finishing second and fourth in the division, respectively.
While both teams have promising futures, the Falcons are ready to take the next step forward. They have the second-best odds to win the NFC South at +175 (BetOnline) while the Panthers sit in third at a distant +500 odds.
The Falcons have a great opportunity to justify those odds if they can capitalize on being the favorite in Week 1. The good news for them is that they’ve won six of their last eight home games against the Panthers, which includes a 37-34 overtime victory last October.
Playing on the road has been a struggle for the Panthers dating back to the 2021 campaign. They’re an underwhelming 2-10 with a minus-10.0 average scoring margin in their last 12 away outings.
I’m also having a hard time putting faith in the Panthers when their wide receiver room is banged up.
As of Thursday, Adam Thielen (ankle), DJ Chark (hamstring), and Terrace Marshall Jr. (back) are all questionable to play against the Falcons. Thielen and Marshall were both limited participants at Wednesday’s practice while Chark was completely absent.
If the trio can’t suit up, rookie QB Bryce Young won’t really have anyone to pass to. Meanwhile, the Falcons’ attack is at full strength after averaging 24.9 PPG at home in 2022 (No. 10 in the NFL). With Bijan Robinson now in the backfield, Atlanta’s attack will only improve.
Although both defenses weren’t anything special last year, it’s worth noting that Carolina has allowed 24-plus points in eight of its last 12 road games with six of those instances seeing 30-plus points scored.
For reference, Atlanta has held its last five opponents at home to a 19.8 PPG clip.
Panthers vs Falcons Prediction and Best Bets
Panthers vs Falcons Prediction: Falcons 23, Panthers 13
Panthers vs Falcons Picks: Falcons -3.5 (Best Value: -107 on Bovada ) & Bijan Robinson Any Time Touchdown (+100 on Bovada)
With the way that the Panthers’ offense is looking, I’m taking the Falcons to win. Atlanta has had Carolina’s number more often than not in recent years, which includes going 10-5 ATS in the last 15 meetings between these NFC South rivals. The home team shouldn’t have a problem covering the spread again.
As for a Panthers vs Falcons prop bet, let’s go with Bijan Robinson scoring an any time touchdown (+100 on Bovada). The rookie RB was a touchdown machine at Texas, amassing 35 TDs over the last two NCAA seasons.
The Falcons will want to feed their shiny new toy early and often, which I see paying off considering that the Panthers surrendered 15 TDs to RBs in 2022.
