NFL MVP Odds 2024: Is Eagles’ Saquon Barkley a Legitimate Threat?

The 2024 NFL season has reached Week 13, which means we’re one step closer to crowning this year’s Most Valuable Player. The NFL MVP race has been all over the place this season and the odds experienced another shakeup over the weekend thanks to one man: Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley.

The veteran runner had a career day during Sunday’s 37-20 victory over the LA Rams at SoFi Stadium. Barkley generated a franchise-record 255 rushing yards on the night, finishing the victory with 302 scrimmage yards and a pair of 70-plus-yard touchdowns. Unsurprisingly, the all-time performance caused the two-time Pro Bowl RB’s MVP odds to skyrocket.

So, is Barkley a legitimate award threat? Or did his latest performance juice his odds more than they deserve?

It isn’t hard to see just how much Barkley’s NFL MVP odds improved following his historic Week 12 performance.

When I wrote my NFL midseason futures awards update at the start of November, Barkley wasn’t even inside BetOnline’s top 10. In fact, he even entered Sunday’s showdown with a distant +6000 odds to win the award, which only equates to an implied win probability of 1.6%.

Fast forward to now and Barkley has the third-best NFL MVP odds on BetOnline (+425), only trailing the Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen (+140) and Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson (+255). The former Penn State superstar is also the only non-quarterback on the list as he looks to become the first running back to win the award since Adrian Peterson took home the hardware in 2012.

The Eagles are currently 9-2 and on a seven-game winning streak, and a lot of that success has to do with Barkley’s performance. The franchise’s major offseason addition has lived up to the hype thus far as he paces the NFL in carries (223), rushing yards (1,392), yards per carry (6.2), rushing yards per game (126.5), and total scrimmage yards (1,649). That’s without mentioning the 12 touchdowns he’s racked up along the way — his best total since he amassed 15 TDs as a rookie.

If the Eagles continue to produce wins, there’s no reason why Barkley can’t win his first-ever MVP award. He’s clearly the best non-QB in football and has a chance to further improve his odds considering that Philadelphia owns the second-most favorable remaining schedule for RBs, according to Fantasy Pros. Even though a juicy fantasy football schedule doesn’t necessarily guarantee real-life success, it’s clear that Barkley’s upcoming opponents are more than beatable.

Best 2024 NFL MVP Bet: Saquon Barkley (+425)

With how he’s been playing this season, there’s no harm in sprinkling some scratch on a Saquon Barkley NFL MVP win at +425 odds.

Even though it’s been over a decade since an RB was last named MVP, Barkley has the best shot in a long time at ending that streak. The Bronx, NY native continues to find ways to outdo himself and that’ll keep being the case as long as the Eagles use him as the focal point of their offense. He’s thrived with every opportunity given to him and continuing to capitalize on those chances will only further improve his odds.

In other words, it’s best to hop on the Barkley MVP hype train before it leaves the station and his odds shorten even more.
