After a tight division race in 2021, the NFC West was dominated last season by the San Francisco 49ers. With a 13-4 record, San Francisco finished four games ahead of the Seattle Seahawks.
Since the Seahawks won back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014, there hasn’t been a repeat winner in the NFC West.
That run looks likely to come to an end this season. As per BetUS, the Niners have the shortest division winner odds of the favorites in the NFC East, NFC North, NFC South, and NFC West.
Odds to Win the NFC West in 2023
Odds are via BetUS as of Thursday, August 17, 2023.
- San Francisco 49ers -170
- Seattle Seahawks +200
- Los Angeles Rams +900
- Arizona Cardinals +2500
NFC West 2023 Division Breakdown
San Francisco 49ers (-170)
After winning the NFC West on the way to reaching the Super Bowl in the 2019 season, things came crashing down for the 49ers the following year.
In that 2020 season, the 49ers were decimated by injuries on both sides of the ball. They had a decent 4-3 start but lost seven of nine to finish 6-10 and last in the NFC West.
For San Francisco to not win the NFC West this season, a similar disaster would have to occur. If it doesn’t, the Niners will challenge for the top seed in the NFC.
Seattle Seahawks (+200)
Last season, the Seahawks were one of the bigger surprise successes in the NFL.
After trading Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, Seattle won nine games with Geno Smith. They reached the playoffs, where they lost to the 49ers in the wild-card round.
A downturn is definitely possible, but it’s also a good possibility that Seattle could be even better this season. They won’t be good enough to win the NFC West unless the 49ers fall off, but they could be good enough to win 10+ games and reach the postseason again.
With DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, first-round NFL Draft pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and tight ends Noah Fant and Will Dissly, Smith has several good targets to throw to. And following a successful rookie campaign (1,059 yards, nine touchdowns), RB Kenneth Walker III is poised for a big second season.
The defense could stand to be better but forced a lot of turnovers last season. The return of LB Bobby Wagner after a year with the Rams will certainly be a boost, both because of his experience and his ability.
Los Angeles Rams (+900)
The Rams mortgaged a lot on a run at a title in 2021, and it ultimately paid off.
But with Matthew Stafford playing in only nine games and not playing particularly well in those nine games, as well as a host of other issues, the Rams finished 5-12 and third in the NFC West. No other defending Super Bowl champion has ever had that many losses.
Will things be better in 2023?
Stafford, 2021 NFL Offensive Player of the Year Cooper Kupp, three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald, and coach Sean McVay do make for a nice foundation. A run at a wild-card spot isn’t out of the question with a healthy team.
But not contending for at least a few seasons is the price they are paying for–justifiably, it must be said–focusing on the present.
Arizona Cardinals (+2500)
The Kliff Kingsbury era is over in the desert, mercifully. Now, former Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon is wearing the head man’s headset.
However, don’t expect much of the Cardinals this season. That is even if Kyler Murray is able to play most of the season after tearing his ACL last December. Unless major improvement takes place, they are destined to land in the NFC West cellar yet again.
NFC West 2023 Division Winner Prediction: San Francisco 49ers (-170)
Last season, the 49ers clinched the NFC West title with several weeks to spare. Even if the Seahawks are indeed better, San Francisco should comfortably win the division again.
That said, with 2020 in mind, it would be wise for anyone who bets on or follows the 49ers to knock on any wood in sight and cross every appendage possible from here until January.
