See Picks & Statistics For The GameBoth the New England Patriots and New York Jets lost close games in Week 1 with rookie quarterbacks taking the snaps. Either Mac Jones or Zach Wilson will pick up their first NFL win this afternoon as the Patriots-Jets rivalry is renewed at MetLife Stadium. Jones is currently the NFL betting favorite for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award after a solid debut against the Miami Dolphins, but a win for Wilson will boost his chances.
A win and either team can be quickly back in it. New England expected a return to the playoffs and probably needs this game more than the rebuilding Jets.
However, rookie Jets coach Robert Saleh has to be pumped to try and get his first career win against eventual Hall of Famer Bill Belichick. There should be some intensity to this one.

New England Patriots vs. New York Jets Betting Outlook
The Pats made the move to dump Cam Newton and go with Mac Jones as the starter as a rookie. I think it was the right way to play it, and he looked solid in the opener. He didn’t make any big mistakes and with the offense they have, they just need him to make the smart plays. He might be capable of more, but we are not going to see that with this team, not the way it is constructed. This is a team that wants to run the ball and play great defense. They came up just short last week against the Dolphins.
In Week 2 they have an easier opponent, even if it is a road game. They get to face a rookie QB and one a little more likely to make a mistake than their own. The Jets have no real running game to speak of, so the Pats can be focused on making things uncomfortable for Wilson. I expect they will too.
New Jets Faces Get First Home Test
The Jets’ Week 1 loss at Carolina was definitely not a disaster, but at the same time there are concerns.
They could not move the ball on the ground against the Panthers, which put a lot of pressure on their rookie quarterback. On the positive side, Wilson has already developed some good chemistry with free-agent acquisition WR Corey Davis, who had close to 100 yards and scored two touchdowns last Sunday. He gives them a quick strike option which means they don’t have to score on long drives. Those are tough to generate against defenses like New England's.
Defensively, the Jets surrendered only 19 points to the Panthers, but they allowed QB Sam Darnold to feel very comfortable against his former team. They sacked him only once and that is the key. Just like New England, they are going to want to make things uncomfortable for the passer.
NFL Betting Trends to Consider for New England Patriots vs New York Jets
- New England is 6-2 ATS in their last eight games after accumulating more than 250 yards passing in their previous game.
- The Patriots are 6-2 ATS in their last eight road games against teams with a losing home record.
- The Patriots are 24-9 ATS in their last 33 games against teams with a losing record.
- The Jets 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a ATS loss.
- The Jets are 4-1 ATS in their last five games as a home underdog.
- They are also 4-1 ATS in their last five home games.
New England Patriots vs New York Jets Best Bets
I really don’t like either of these teams much but I am more sold on the Patriots with their defense being the best unit on either team. Also the Pats can run the ball and that combination should lead to a victory. I am not fond of the number at this time but as long as it stays under 7 the visitors are the way to play. Wilson is making his first home start and might not be ready for all that comes with it. He has a tendency to force throws at times so we will see how it goes. I am just not ready to throw my money behind him just yet.
Prop Watch: Corey Davis Over 52.5 Yards Receiving
It looks like Davis is going to be the go to go guy for Wilson. If that is the case I think this one will be covered before the end of the first half. They probably have enough plays in the original script to get him close to that total and there is a great chance he busts one that might cover the whole thing on one play. I don't think we will be sweating this on the final drive. Also, if they are behind that will help. That means they will just throw more.
New England Patriots vs New York Jets Score Prediction
New England Patriots 27, New York Jets 17
