The 2024 NFL Coach of the Year odds open with the Chicago Bears’ Matt Eberflus and Los Angeles Chargers’ Jim Harbaugh as the +800 co-favorites on BetOnline.
Eberflus is entering his third season with the Bears after coaching them to a 7-10 record last season. While that may not necessarily seem impressive on paper, it’s worth noting that Chicago has the NFL’s best defense in the second half of the season following DE Montez Sweat’s acquisition. The defense is now poised to pick up from where it left off while the offense has been greatly improved with the offseason additions of Caleb Williams, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, and more.
Meanwhile, Harbaugh is making his NFL return following an impressive run with the Michigan Wolverines. The Chargers only went 5-12 last season, so there really is nowhere to go but up. Harbaugh has plenty of young pieces to work with this fall and if he can get the most out of them, his COTY odds could skyrocket in no time.
Matt LaFleur (GB), Raheem Morris (ATL), and Mike Macdonald (SEA) round out the top five at +1200 odds apiece. The Packers exceeded expectations last season, resulting in LaFleur finishing eighth in COTY voting. Morris is back for his second stint with a much-improved Falcons squad that’ll be led by QB Kirk Cousins under center. Meanwhile, the 37-year-old Macdonald is in his first-ever head coaching job, leaving time to tell if he has what it takes to finish atop his peers.

NFL Coach of the Year Predictions & Dark Horse Pick
When it comes to my 2024 NFL COTY pick, I’m going with Jim Harbaugh (+800).
Voters tend to look at teams who’ve improved the most when judging this award and I can see the 60-year-old HC fitting the bill. Again, the Chargers only won five games last season, which is an easily surpassable number. In his four previous seasons behind an NFL bench, Harbaugh racked up 44 wins in 64 games, which translates to an average of 11.0 wins per year. I’m not saying that a similar number will be guaranteed, however, Los Angeles does own the second-easiest schedule this season.
From Joey Bosa to Justin Herbert, the Chargers have a plethora of talented players who’ll make Harbaugh’s life easier. Considering how he also already won the award with the San Francisco 49ers back in 2011, Harbaugh certainly has what it takes to win it again.
As for my COTY dark horse, I’m eyeing Robert Saleh (+1800). Now that Aaron Rodgers appears to be healthy, the Jets are one of the likelier bounce-back teams after going 7-10 last season. New York’s defense was among the league’s best last year, so a healthy Rodgers elevating the offense would cement them as one of the top AFC threats. If that happens and everyone plays to their potential, nabbing Saleh at +1800 odds could be the steal of the century.
NFL Coach of the Year Prediction: Jim Harbaugh, LAC (+800)
NFL Coach of the Year Dark Horse: Robert Saleh, NYJ (+1800)
