Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season left football fans with many memorable moments. However, those are in the rearview mirror as Week 2 is set to begin in a few days. One of the games to look forward to is a Thursday Night Football collision between two AFC West rivals as the Kansas City Chiefs host the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Chargers walked out of Week 1 with a hard-fought 24-19 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Justin Herbert completed 26 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns in the victory, while offseason trade acquisition Khalil Mack recorded a trio of sacks in his Los Angeles debut.
The Chiefs also enjoyed success to open the schedule, securing a dominant 44-21 win against the Arizona Cardinals. Patrick Mahomes proved that he doesn’t need Tyreek Hill to do some damage, throwing out five touchdown passes to four different players.
Fortunately, Betting News has gathered the latest Chargers vs. Chiefs odds from BetOnline Sportsbook to help shed some light on the situation, along with a prediction and best bets for the NFL Week 2 game.

Los Angeles Chargers vs. Kansas City Chiefs Prediction and Picks

Chargers vs. Chiefs Picks: Chiefs -3.5 (Best Value: -110 at BetOnline) & Over 54.5 Points (Best Value: -105 at BetOnline)
The Chargers and Chiefs looked like the best teams in the AFC West last week. Mahomes and Herbert are on completely different levels and it won’t be shocking if both gunslingers try to outdo the other on Thursday night.
Fans were worried about whether or not Mahomes could be productive without Hill, but he clearly showed that isn’t the case. He connected with Travis Kelce on eight passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. Mahomes even had chemistry with offseason addition JuJu Smith-Schuster, who had 79 receiving yards on six receptions.
Most importantly, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire proved that he could be an important part of the passing game. The third-year rusher made three receptions, two of which were for touchdowns.
Even Kansas City’s defense looked better than it did last year. The Cardinals have offensive potential, but the Chiefs held them to just seven points through the first three quarters and 282 total yards by the end of the game.
The Chargers’ offense also looked solid last week, generating 355 total yards. The run game must be better, though. Starting RB Austin Ekeler only averaged 2.6 rushing yards on 14 carries, which is disappointing considering how he’s averaged 5.2 yards per carry in 5.2 yards in eight career games against Kansas City.
Unfortunately, the Chargers’ offense might be shorthanded in Week 2. No. 1 wide receiver Keenan Allen suffered a hamstring injury last week and it’s unclear if he’s going to play due to a quick turnaround.
If the offense is shorthanded, the Chargers need their defense to do its best to slow Mahomes down. Players like Mack and Joey Bosa must get past the Chiefs’ offensive line early and often, while defensive backs Asante Samuel Jr. and Derwin James must shut down the opposing pass-catchers.
Thursday Night Football games can get wild, so look for Mahomes and Herbert to put on a show. At the end of the day, I’m expecting the Chiefs to win a shootout here due to their being healthier than their AFC West rivals.
Aside from taking the Chiefs as 3.5-point favorites, another good bet to make is taking the over on the total. In the fourth Chargers-Chiefs games since Herbert was drafted, the average total has been 57 points.
Considering the offensive potential that’s present, that trend should continue.
