Betting on the Super Bowl can be a hit-or-miss experience sometimes. Bettors might have a good feeling regarding picks they’ve locked in, however, the unpredictable nature of the event sometimes throws all that planning out the window. Nevertheless, certain trends can’t be ignored and it’d be silly not to sprinkle a little bit of money on them before the Chiefs and 49ers meet.
Here are three must-bet Super Bowl betting trends to lock in right now.
3 Must-Bet Super Bowl Betting Trends
Any of the following Super Bowl 58 odds are as of Monday, Feb. 5 at 12:17 p.m. ET.
1. Underdogs Cover the Spread at the Super Bowl
Even though the 49ers are the favorites across the majority of sportsbooks, the Chiefs are the ones receiving a ton of attention as Super Bowl 58 underdogs. After all, Andy Reid & Co. have been to three Super Bowls since the 2019 campaign, winning two of them — including Super Bowl LVII last year. It’s that experience that has a lot of bettors backing a Kansas City upset.
Do the Chiefs have what it takes to win another Super Bowl title?
Although I’m still one of the few people who seems to still believe in the 49ers, history shows that backing the Chiefs might be the way to go.
The underdog is a whopping 12-4 ATS (75.0%) across the last 16 Super Bowls, which includes the Chiefs’ victory over the Philadelphia Eagles last year. Interestingly enough, Kansas City is also 17-4-1 ATS in its last 22 games as the underdog and is 3-0 ATS when the odds haven’t been in its favor this season.
The 49ers have been the favorite 19 times this season but only covered the spread on nine of those occasions (47.4%). It’s also worth noting that San Francisco is 1-4 ATS in its last five games whereas Kansas City is 5-0 ATS during that stretch.
I still feel like the Niners will emerge victorious, however, I’d feel silly not to at least back the Chiefs as spread underdogs, too.

2. Back a Quarterback to Win Super Bowl MVP
One of the most popular Super Bowl bets is betting on who’ll be named the game’s Most Valuable Player. The 49ers and Cheifs both boast a handful of players who are talented enough to win the award, ranging from superstar running back Christian McCaffrey to two-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes.
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is one of six players to have won multiple Super Bowl MVP awards (2) in NFL history.
However, if you’re planning to get in on the SBMVP action, history shows that it’s best to bet on a quarterback.
A total of 58 players have received Super Bowl MVP honors over the years and 32 of them have been quarterbacks (55.2%). In fact, 12 of the 17 previous recipients played the position — including five of the last seven.
While winning football games is a team effort, it’s no secret that QBs see most of the glory, hence why they often win this award. It wouldn’t be all that shocking if this game comes down to whether Mahomes and Brock Purdy can outperform the other with the victory emerging as the game’s MVP.
Although Mahomes is a solid pick to win his third Super Bowl MVP award (+140), I also like the value that comes with Purdy at +250.

3. The Under is Consistent in Recent Super Bowls
With all the talent that the Chiefs and 49ers possess, it makes sense that sportsbooks like Bovada have set Sunday’s projected total at 47.5 points. The Over is 28-27-1 all-time at the Super Bowl, however, backing the Under could be the way to go.
Should bettors expect a low-scoring Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium?
For starters, the Under is 4-1 in the last five Super Bowls and even hit in four straight years before the last one. The average score of the games was 44.6 points, finishing with fewer than 47.5 points in three of those encounters.
The Chiefs are also no strangers to low-scoring games this season, proven by the Under being 14-6 overall and 5-1 in their last six games. Although the Under hit less frequently for the 49ers (8-10-1), it is 4-4-1 when they’re outside of Levi’s Stadium and 5-2 in their seven previous encounters with an AFC West team.
With the Chiefs and 49ers possessing two of the NFL’s best defenses and this game being played on a neutral site, finishing with fewer points than projected wouldn’t surprise me.
