- Western Kentucky +2.5 (+100)
- Sam Houston -2.5 (-120)
- Over/Under 56
This is a huge matchup in the Conference USA tonight. The Sam Houston Bearkats host the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, with both teams sitting at 2-0 in conference play. Liberty is on top of both squads, sitting at 3-0 and 5-0 overall, but both of these teams will have a shot to take down the Flames later in the season. Now, Sam Houston is coming off a bye week, and are short home favorites on this nationally televised game. Both squads beat up on UTEP in their last matchup, as we saw similar scores in those games.
As far as being tested, Sam Houston barely beat Texas State, and got drilled by Central Florida on the road in Week 1. The Hilltoppers also got drilled in Week 1, losing to Alabama 63-0 in Tuscaloosa. In late September, they went on the road to Boston College and lost by just 1 to the Golden Eagles. Ultimately, I think this Hilltoppers team is a little bit better than the Bearkats, but the fact that Sam Houston is coming off a bye worries me a bit. However, Western Kentucky does have a bye week ahead of them, so their full focus should be on the task at hand.
Sam Houston “looks ahead” to facing a 2-4 FIU team on the road, so I’m not too worried about them being unfocused. They know the stakes of this game, with the winner likely facing Liberty in the Conference USA Championship game later in the season. As for my coin, here’s where it’s going.
Best Bet: Western Kentucky ML (+115) BetOnline
I’ll take a shot at the road dog tonight. I simply think this Hilltoppers team is better, despite their record and being on the road. Now, Sam Houston is at home coming off a bye. That’s always scary. But I see this Western Kentucky team as more battle tested, more talented, and better coached, and I see them putting all of that together on the road tonight.
Everyone loves some plus money, but not everyone likes taking a road conference underdog. This game should be closer to a pick’em like it opened in my eyes, and even though I missed out on +3, I think the Hilltoppers come out on top tonight.
Florida International vs UTEP Best Bets
Betting Odds
- FIU -7 (-114)
- UTEP +7 (-106)
- Over/Under 47
I’ll admit, this game is gross, but it is another Conference USA matchup! UTEP is terrible. They are 0-6 on the season, score just 14.4 points per game, and could very seriously go winless this year. At home tonight, you would home they come out with some fire, but they are facing an FIU Panthers team that is coming off a loss, but built some momentum in the process.
FIU just took the conference Goliath, Liberty, to Overtime, losing 31-24. They easily covered the 16 point spread, and the week before, won outright by a touchdown as 2 point underdogs. The one time FIU was favored this year, they actually lost outright to Monmouth by 3 points, despite being projected to win by 12 points. Can they show out tonight? Or will they play down to the Miners level?
Slight Lean: FIU -7 (-114) BetOnline
I will not be backing the Panthers tonight, but I lean with them to cover. Like I said, they have built some good momentum the past two weeks, and I trust them to keep it going tonight against the inferior UTEP Miners. They’ve only covered one spread all year, ironically to Liberty, but failed to cover 19.5 just 6 days ago, and I don’t think they have the offense to keep up.
