See Picks & Statistics For The GameDown in Frisco, Texas the Memphis Tigers and West Virginia Mountaineers meet for some postseason action in the Scooter’s Coffee Bowl tonight! The two teams have had completely different seasons, and both show up to this bowl game with little on their mind but winning.
The Mountaineers fired head coach Neal Brown, and OC Chad Scott will take over for this bowl game. The list of opt outs, injuries, and transfers is very long for West Virginia, and after a 6-6 season, motivation could be an issue here. However, player’s have been known to rally around a head coach firing, and of course, everyone wants to win their bowl game.
Especially the Memphis Tigers who ended the season 10-2 despite not making the AAC Championship game. They lost on the road at Navy and at UTSA this season, competing in both ball games. Memphis is on a 3 game winning streak, and I don’t necessarily see them slowing down tonight. Will they rally and win this bowl game? Or can the Mountaineers surprise the world?

Will Mountaineers Rally After Firing Head Coach?
Like I mentioned, West Virginia’s list of banged up players is extremely long.
Second leading receiver Traylon Ray is out for the year after catching 28 passes for 426 yards and 4 TDs. Jaden Bray hasn’t played since Week 6, and starting DBs Ayden Garnes and Aubrey Burks haven’t seen the field since Week 7. Their Top LB has committed to Mizzou, and it is likely Josiah Trotter sits out in this one. They have several other potential opt outs on both sides of the ball, and I think this team has sort of rolled over and died.
However, the guys who take the field are more than likely going to show out for their OC who has taken the reigns of this offense. While Memphis is certainly playing the better football at this point, the Mountaineers were battle tested this season unlike the Tigers.
West Virginia played 3 ranked opponents this season, and despite losing all of them, two of those teams ended up playing in their conference championship. Memphis technically did not see a ranked opponent until their last game of the season, beating #17 Tulane by double digits as two touchdown underdogs. I see this Tigers team having a much bigger chip on their shoulder, as Tulane was rolled by Army in the AAC Championship. Memphis more than likely thinks they should’ve been in that spot, and now they are going to prove it by beating a Power 4 opponent in a bowl game.

Best Bets: Memphis -6 (-110) BetOnline
Here we go, Tigers, here we go *clap clap*!
Memphis is much more motivation, they have a much shorter list of opt outs and injuries, and I trust them to keep rolling against a West Virginia defense that is very depleted.
The Mountaineers are 101st in the FBS (of 134 teams) in total defense, giving up over 414 yards to their opposing offenses per game. This translates into 32.6 points per game, ranking 109th in the FBS. Those numbers are also up to 40.7 over the past few weeks, and they gave up 52 to Texas Tech to end the season. The Mountaineers defense is going to have a tough time stopping Mario Anderson on the ground, but 110.5 yards for him is a little too much for me to touch his prop.
Regardless, the Memphis offense should be firing. They rank 14th in the country, scoring 34.7 points per contest. How have the Mountaineers done against high scoring offenses?
West Virginia vs Top 40 Scoring Offenses
- Iowa State: 28 points (36th)
- Penn State: 34 points (24th)
- Baylor: 49 points (21st)
- Texas Tech: 52 points (3rd)
Memphis should have no problem scoring the ball and turning this game into a shootout. West Virginia won’t be able to keep up, and I see the Tigers winning this by at least a touchdown.
