Initial Leans
Florida head coach Billy Napier’s odds at -300 are quite accurate. The Gators have struggled under Napier, posting an 11-15 record over the past three seasons and making only one bowl appearance—a loss to Oregon State in the 2022 Las Vegas Bowl.
The 2024 season began with a blowout loss to Miami at home, and the challenges are far from over. Florida still faces #14 Tennessee, #1 Georgia, #3 Texas, #18 LSU, and #6 Ole Miss. The Gators simply lack the talent to compete with these top-ranked SEC teams, whether at home or on the road.
It’s surprising to not see Florida State’s head coach, Mike Norvell, on this list. Despite starting the season with two straight conference losses and a disappointing performance from quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, the Seminoles’ season appears bleak already, just two weeks in.
I will be watching these odds closely. If Norvell appears on the list, I will definitely revisit this topic later in the season. It’s surprising given Florida State’s undefeated 2023 season and their belief that they were robbed of a playoff spot. But in today’s era of the transfer portal and NIL, college football can change rapidly. This is no longer your father’s college football.
Value Play
I might be a Clemson skeptic, but Dabo Swinney at +2000 seems like a play with some significant value.
Since Trevor Lawrence left for the NFL in 2021, Swinney’s Clemson team hasn’t been the same. Despite winning 11 games in 2022, a 9-4 record last season was concerning. Once a powerhouse always in the National Championship mix, Clemson now feels like a shadow of its former self, as evidenced by their 34-3 blowout loss to #1 Georgia in week 1.
Swinney appears out of touch with the new era of college sports, particularly by refusing to use the transfer portal, which could help rejuvenate the program and make it a contender again. His reluctance to adapt may ultimately lead to his dismissal. Although the ACC is a weaker conference, which may keep him afloat for now, the lack of adaptation will likely catch up with him eventually.
Clemson’s notable upcoming matchups include September 21 against #24 NC State and November 2 against #22 Louisville.
