The annual Navy vs. Army matchup is here, and once again, the under is the play to make. With both teams running the triple option and a history of low-scoring games, it’s hard to ignore the trends. Here’s why I believe this year’s game will follow suit and stay under the total.

Is it really that simple? Year after year, it seems to be. The under has hit in ten straight matchups, including this year’s line of 39.5. Despite how well-known this trend is, I’m still confident it stays under again.

Full transparency: I locked in under 41.5 earlier, but I still endorse 39.5. Army is riding high after their monumental win over Tulane last week to secure their first-ever American Athletic Conference Championship. That victory meant everything to them, and it showed as they dominated the Green Wave 35-14 as 5.5-point underdogs.

Both teams run similar triple-option offenses, and both defenses know exactly what to expect. Stopping the triple option requires familiarity, and no one knows it better than another triple-option team. Army is 7th in the nation in rushing yards allowed per game, while Navy ranks 83rd, giving up nearly 165 yards per game. While Army’s defense has been stronger, you can expect Navy’s intensity to match the occasion.

Adding to Navy’s challenges is the uncertainty at quarterback. Starter Blake Horvath has missed two weeks with a back injury, leaving sophomore Braxton Woodson likely to start again. Woodson impressed against ECU in Week 14, throwing for over 160 yards, rushing for 125, and scoring three combined touchdowns.

If I had to lean toward a side, it would be Army. They have been outstanding all season and just steamrolled Tulane—a team that crushed Navy two weeks ago. Still, I’m not comfortable betting on a military school to dominate by a touchdown. I will stick with the tried-and-true: give me the under.
