This Saturday, someone who has made many headlines and highlights over the past three months will receive the Heisman Trophy, the most prestigious individual award in college football. But who will that player be?
On Monday, the 2023 Heisman Trophy finalists were named, and it is a list that contains no surprises.
LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., and Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. will all be in the Big Apple for Saturday’s award presentation, where their achievements will be lauded before one of the fortunate four becomes the latest name to be etched in college football immortality.

Last season, USC quarterback Caleb Williams took home the hardware, and he was the favorite entering this season.
However, while he himself had another impressive season, throwing for 3,633 yards and 30 touchdowns and rushing for 11 scores, he and the Trojans had an underwhelming 7-5 season.
As a result, the wait for another two-time or back-to-back Heisman winner continues, and it will continue for another couple of years, as all four of this year’s finalists will be in the NFL this time next year.
It’s certainly never too early to think about who will take home the trophy next year–with some big names already in the transfer portal and more likely to enter, the winner could very well be among them–but for now, let’s focus on the four 2023 finalists.
Odds to Win the 2023 Heisman Trophy
Odds are courtesy of BetOnline.
- Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU -1000
- Michael Penix Jr., QB, Washington +700
- Bo Nix, QB, Oregon +1600
- Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio State +6600
2023 Heisman Trophy Finalists
Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU (Odds to Win the Heisman Trophy: -1000)
2023 Season Stats for Daniels
- Passing: 236 of 327 (72.2%), 3812 yards, 40 TD, 4 INT
- Rushing: 135 attempts, 1134 yards (8.4 YPA), 10 TD
The best performer in college football does not always win the Heisman, but Daniels is poised to do so.
Entering Championship Week, he was behind Nix in the pecking order at online sportsbooks. But the odds saw a dramatic shift after Nix and Oregon lost to Penix and Washington in the Pac-12 Championship Game, and Daniels is now a heavy, heavy favorite.
LSU, who will face Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl on New Year’s Day, is 9-3 this season with losses to Florida State, Ole Miss, and Alabama.
But Daniels has been outstanding in a schedule that has featured a playoff team (Alabama), two Power 5 champions (Alabama and FSU), and three New Year’s Six teams (FSU, Missouri, and Ole Miss), and his place as the Heisman favorite is deserved.
He accounted for 509 yards and all eight touchdowns against Georgia State (six passing, two rushing), racked up 606 yards and five touchdowns against Florida (372 yards and three touchdowns passing and 234 yards and two touchdowns rushing), and put up 513 yards and five touchdowns in the loss at Ole Miss.
And in his games against FSU, Alabama, Missouri, and Ole Miss, Daniels tallied 1,248 yards and 10 touchdowns (with two interceptions) passing and 456 yards and three touchdowns rushing.
Michael Penix Jr., QB, Washington (-700)
2023 Season Stats for Penix
- Passing: 307 of 466 (65.9%), 4218 yards, 33 TD, 9 INT
- Rushing: 29 attempts, -18 yards (-0.6 YPA), 3 TD
Last year, Penix finished eighth in Heisman voting and led Washington to an 11-2 season. This year, he will get a trip to New York, as well as a trip to New Orleans (and perhaps a trip to Houston) as he has led the Huskies to a 13-0 record, a Pac-12 title, and a matchup with Texas in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Bo Nix, QB, Oregon (+1600)
2023 Season Stats for Nix
- Passing: 336 of 435 (77.2%), 4145 yards, 40 TD, 3 INT
- Rushing: 53 attempts, 228 yards (4.3 YPA), 6 TD
Along with missing out on a Pac-12 title and a spot in the CFP semis, Nix appears set to miss out on the Heisman as well.
Still, there’s nothing for him to hang his head about. After three up and down seasons at Auburn, Nix has transformed into one of the best players in college football over his two seasons and could be a high first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio State (+6600)
2023 Season Stats for Harrison
- Receiving: 67 catches, 1211 yards (18.1 YPC), 14 TD
- Rushing: 2 attempts, 26 yards (13.0 YPA), TD
The son of Hall of Fame receiver Harvin Marrison, Harrison will be looking to carve out his own NFL legacy starting next year. His father was drafted 19th overall by the Indianapolis Colts in the 1996 NFL Draft, but Jr. will go significantly higher due to the traits and performances that earned him a ticket to the Heisman ceremony as the only non-quarterback finalist.
This season, Harrison has hit the 100-yard mark eight times, with season highs of 11 catches (versus Penn State), 163 yards (versus Maryland), and three touchdowns (two receiving and one rushing versus Michigan State).
Harrison is tied for second in the FBS in touchdown catches, while he ranks ninth in receiving yards and 36th in catches.
But he has had a huge year even with a new starting quarterback in Kyle McCord, who didn’t have the smoothest of seasons (and is now in the portal) after taking over from now-NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year favorite and potential MVP candidate C.J. Stroud.
