See Picks & Statistics For The GameThursday Night Football will return professionally to Amazon Prime this week, but we also have a very exciting College Football matchup on ESPN tomorrow night as well! The Arizona State Sun Devils head east to take on the Texas State Bobcats. Both teams are 2-0 going into this matchup, having started off their season hot, but who will hang on and win this next game?
The Sun Devils absolutely demolished the Wyoming Cowboys when they came to town from Laramie, beating them 48-7 in Week 1. Last weekend they hosted an SEC squad and took it to the Bulldogs of Mississippi State, beating them 30-23 and totaling 346 yards on the ground. Cam Skattebo ran 33 times for 262 yards, adding 3 receptions for 35 yards as he was the leading receiver last weekend. Now Arizona State must play their first road game of the season, and it will be nationally televised against whom I think is an underrated football team.
The Texas State Bobcats started off 2-0 this season by beating Lamar 34-27 in Week 1 and absolutely annihilating the UTSA Road Runners 49-10. The Bobcats were a touchdown favorite in that game, but UTSA was picked to finish high in the American conference. Quarterback Jordan McCloud has thrown for nearly 600 yards and 5 TDs in just 2 games this year, and he has the Bobcat’s offense firing on all cylinders. They are scoring 41.5 points per contest, and that should be tough for Arizona State to stop.
Will the Sun Devils be able to slow down Texas State? Or will the Bobcats give Arizona State a good ole fashioned Texas welcome?

Sun Devils Take on Feisty Bobcats on the Road
The Bobcats are a very good football team. They have won four straight games dating back to last season, Jordan McCloud looks incredibly comfortable after leading JMU to an 11-2 season last year and transferring in, and their defense did a great job shutting down UTSA. Most importantly, the offense is clicking and was able to put up nearly 50 points against a very good Road Runner defense. Being at home is huge for the Bobcats in this matchup against a Big 12 opponent, but I don’t think they are getting enough love.
For starters, their interior line is nasty. The Bobcats are allowing just 82 rushing yards per game and 2.7 yards per attempt. Their weakness is certainly their secondary, and with Skattebo in the backfield, I bet the Bobcats load the box and force Arizona State to throw the ball. Daring Sam Leavitt and the Devils’ offense to beat you with his arm will take Skattebo out of the game completely. Quite frankly, I do not have faith in the Arizona State offense to be able to put up that many points if they can’t run the ball.
Back the Bobcats
As for Texas State’s offense, they face the Devils’ defense that is much worse than you would expect looking at their record. The Bobcats put up nearly 7 yards per play against a UTSA defense that is slightly better than Arizona State’s. Add in a nationally televised standalone game, and I bet Mr. McCloud shows out at home for Texas State. Although I have to admit, the Sun Devils have surprised me so far this season, I think they come crashing back to Earth on the road against a very good Group of 5 team, that has proven they may be a threat to the other small conference teams.
For the price I’m being dealt, I’ll definitely back the Bobcats.

For plus money, I will simply back, in my eyes, the better team who is at home. Texas State returned RB Ismail Mahdi who has already produced over 230 total yards and a touchdown this season. Along with him, Chris Dawn Jr. has immediately connected with McCloud at QB. Like I said, the offense for the Bobcats is clicking. Arizona State gave up nearly 6 yards per play against a Mississippi State offense that is nowhere near as good as Texas State’s.
Coming off a huge win against a rock solid defense, I see Texas State riding that momentum all the way into a home upset. Don’t be fooled by Arizona State’s hot start they aren’t a very good football team, and I’m sure that starts to show this week prior to Big 12 play. Give me the Bobcats, keep the points, we won’t need them when they come out victorious.
