Rematch of the (New) Year
The rematch we have all circled since the College Football Playoff bracket was announced is finally here: No. 6 Ohio State vs. No. 1 Oregon. The Week 7 matchup saw the Ducks edge out the Buckeyes in a nail-biting 32-31 win. In this one, forget about picking sides—the over is the play. For full transparency, I grabbed the over at 52.5 when the lines first opened. I am not concerned with the current line at 56, especially since the first game ended with 63 points. Why do the books expect this game to be almost ten points lower?
Points, Points, Points
I have said this more than once, but I will say it again: Penn State exposed the Ducks’ defense in the Big Ten Championship. Oregon’s defense will struggle to stop a Buckeyes offense that averages 36 points per game and racks up over 425 yards per game. Penn State managed 523 yards on Oregon, rushing for nearly 300 yards and passing for over 225 yards. The Buckeyes have even more weapons than the Nittany Lions, and with almost three months to adjust, Ohio State’s offense will be ready to take on the Ducks again.
As for Oregon’s offense, it is a juggernaut, ranking as the sixth-highest scoring offense in the country with almost 450 yards per game. Now they face a defense that has not faced an offense of this caliber since their last encounter. Ohio State’s defense has made adjustments since their Week 7 loss, but the Ducks’ offense has proven capable of showing up against any team.
This game has shootout written all over it, and the line moving up by 2.5 points reflects that. Both teams are 5-7 on overs this season, which makes sense given that most of their games have been one-sided affairs, where they score big and hold opponents to under 10 points. With two incredible offenses facing off, this should be the game of the week.
Why not root for points?
