#5 Notre Dame vs #2 Georgia Bet
People are already doubting that the Georgia Bulldogs will be able to perform against Notre Dame, despite not having played a full game without starting quarterback Carson Beck. The audacity to doubt the most battle-tested team in the country—a team with one of the best defenses that has shown up in every game they have played. Let me give you a quick rundown of Georgia’s schedule without forcing you to open a tab.
Georgia’s Gauntlet
To start, their most notable games: the season opener at home against No. 14 Clemson, at Kentucky, at No. 4 Alabama, at No. 1 Texas, at No. 16 Ole Miss, vs. No. 7 Tennessee, and again against No. 2 Texas in the SEC Championship. They came out of those games 5-2. After their win over Texas in the SEC Championship, Georgia then had almost an entire month off to rest and prepare for this matchup in round two against Notre Dame, one of the biggest turnarounds of the season. The Irish have been impressive since their week two loss to NIU at home.
Notre Dame is coming off an impressive 27-17 home win over No. 8 Indiana, where Indiana barely looked like they belonged on the same field for most of the game. The Hoosiers only turned it on in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points, but by then it was too late. Now, Notre Dame faces an SEC powerhouse that has dominated the conference for the past five years. With Beck out due to his injury in the SEC Championship, it will be up to sophomore Gunner Stockton.
Despite having only 51 pass attempts over the last two seasons, this former four-star recruit from Tiger, Georgia, stepped up in the second half against Texas, passing for 71 yards and completing 75% of his throws. He did throw an interception, but mistakes are inevitable when you’re thrown into a game unexpectedly. Now, with over three weeks of preparation, Stockton should be ready to lead the Bulldogs to victory over the Fighting Irish in round two of the College Football Playoffs.
Georgia’s Keys to Success
Notre Dame has faced their fair share of tests this season, playing five ranked opponents, including Indiana. However, those opponents do not compare to the level of talent Georgia has faced. Georgia’s highly touted defense should keep them in this matchup. Away from home this season, the Bulldogs have held teams under 20 points per game and kept opponents under 100 rushing yards. Stopping Notre Dame’s ground attack—ranked 10th in rush yards per game—will be crucial to Georgia’s success. Stop the run, win the game. Go Dawgs.
