Tonight, one of the hottest teams in college basketball could be in for a real test on the road. Utah State has won eight straight games, but Santa Clara will be looking to bring that streak to an end tonight at the Leavey Center (10:00 pm ET, ESPN+).
Since an overtime loss at Bradley, the Aggies (9-1) have won eight straight games, five of them by double digits. How well they will fare in a Mountain West that appears to be rather deep this season remains to be seen, but Danny Sprinkle’s first season in Logan couldn’t be going much better at present.

While Utah State is riding high, Santa Clara (7-3) is looking to get back on track. The Broncos began the season with six straight wins, including a road win over Stanford and a neutral-site win over Oregon, but they have since lost three of four.
Being back at the Leavey Center might be just the remedy that Herb Sendek’s squad needs, as they are 5-0 there thus far this season.

Utah State vs Santa Clara Prediction and Picks
Prediction: Santa Clara to win
Picks: Santa Clara ML (-102 at BetOnline) & Utah State/Santa Clara first half over 72 (-110 at BetOnline)
Prior to the season, Utah State was picked to finish ninth in the Mountain West. Given the squad and coaching turnover that the Aggies were dealing with, that was an understandable prognostication.
They may well finish ninth, but we are seeing why Sprinkle won 52 games and back-to-back Big Sky titles in his final two seasons at Montana State.
The mass of new faces that the new head man brought in are gelling with every passing game, and the results are pretty darn good, to say the least.
The new face making the biggest impact is someone who came from Bozeman with Sprinkle, junior big man Great Osobor. Osobor averaged 10.1 PPG and 4.6 RPG in 18.9 minutes per game with the Bobcats last season, but he has really broken out with an expanded role with his new team.
Top Players for Utah State
- Great Osobor: 19.5 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 2.7 APG, 2.0 BPG
- Mason Falslev: 12.8 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 3.4 APG, 2.0 SPG
- Ian Martinez: 10.2 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 1.6 APG
- Josh Uduje: 9.6 PPG, 2.6 RPG
- Darius Brown II: 9.4 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 8.0 APG
Osobor has five double-doubles thus far this season, with his best performances coming against Southern Utah (31 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three blocks) and at Saint Louis (24 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, three blocks).
Santa Clara has some good size in seven-footers Christoph Tilly and Francisco Caffaro, so we will see if they can neutralize Osobor’s impact on the offensive and defensive end.
Top Players for Santa Clara
- Adama-Alpha Bal: 14.6 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 3.0 APG
- Carlos Marshall Jr.: 13.9 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 1.7 APG
- Tyeree Bryan: 9.5 PPG, 2.9 RPG
- Christoph Tilly: 9.1 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 2.1 APG
- Johnny O’Neil: 7.7 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 1.6 APG
Sendek no doubt misses Brandon Podziemski, who had the first double-double of his NBA career last night for the Golden State Warriors, as well as Carlos Stewart, who is not having much of an impact at LSU after averaging 15.2 PPG for the Broncos last season.
But Bal and Marshall can both light it up offensively, and if they can do so tonight, Santa Clara has a good chance of coming away with the win over Utah State. Both will certainly be raring to do so after combining for almost as many turnovers (11) as points (13) in last Saturday’s 93-76 loss at New Mexico.
Even though they have lost three of their last four games–and all three losses have been by at least 15 points–I still think a lot of this Santa Clara team and their potential to make some noise in the West Coast Conference this season. I also think a lot of their potential to win tonight, which is why I am picking them to do so.
