NCAA Basketball Best Bets – November 7th, 2024
Southern vs Iowa Best Bets
Best Bet: Southern/Iowa Over 158.5 (-110) BetOnline
We are rooting for some points in Iowa City tonight! If you recall from last year, Iowa was one of the fastest teams in the nation, especially at home. But they fail to play much defense! The Hawkeyes rank 13th in Adjusted Tempo according to Bart Torvik, while Southern is still a Top 120 team in pace as well.
These teams are going to fly up and down the floor, and I trust both teams to have enough opportunities to cover this number. Southern ranks Top 100 in FT Rate offensively, and north of 240 in FT Rate on defense, meaning they get to the line, but also send their opponent their frequently. This should result in plenty of points with the clock stopped, helping us get over this number.
Both teams love to play like a track meet, and I see plenty of possessions for both squads tonight.
Montana State vs Wisconsin Best Bets
Best Bet: Montana State/Wisconsin Under 147.5 (-110) BetOnline
If you know me, you are familiar with this Bobcats team. We backed them ATS and on their unders plenty last season, and we’re doing it again today.
The Bobcats return 5 of their top scorers, as well as adding some JUCO transfers to the roster. This will be their first game of the season, while Wisconsin is coming off a 24 point win against Holy Cross, covering the 23.5 spread. Now they host a much scrappier Montana State team that loves to play gritty defense.
The Badgers lost both Chucky Hepburn and Connor Essegien in the transfer portal, but did return a few starters like 7 foot center Steven Crowl. Wisconsin added a couple key transfers in Xavier Amos from NIU and John Tonje from CSU. Both should make an immediate impact on the squad. However, Wisconsin is likely going to play the same style of basketball they’ve had for years.
Very slow, very methodical offense, mixed with some in your face defense. They ranked 328th in possessions per game last year, and have been north of 270 in pace every year since 2006. The lack of possessions will be enough for this game to stay under.
Bonus Bet: Montana State +17.5 (-113) BetOnline
Going along with a low scoring game, we are backing the Bobcats to keep it close. Montana State is a 3 and D team, but they shoot them very well. The Bobcats shot over 36.5% from deep last year, taking over 42% of their shots from beyond the arc. The Badgers allowed Holy Cross to shoot 37.5% from beyond the arc, and I like Montana State to play good enough defense, and shoot well enough to keep this game within 17 points as it stays under.
Holy Cross was actually beating Wisconsin at halftime before some adjustments were made, but I like Montana State to be able to put up more of a fight than the Crusaders.
Chattanooga vs Saint Mary’s Best Bets
Best Bet: Chattanooga/Saint Mary’s Under 137.5 (-115) BetOnline
Now, these lines are moving as always, but I see defense coming to play in this matchup. Saint Mary’s is one of the slowest, defensive minded teams in the nation. They rank 360th in adjusted tempo, and 24th defensively. As for the Mocs, they are also a very slow team, ranking 222nd in pace. What they do fantastic on defense is refusing to foul. Chattanooga ranks 7th in FT Rate defensively, holding their opponents to less than 11 FTA per contest.
This will certainly come into play in this slow paced game, as points will be at a premium, and keeping your opponent off the free throw line is a huge way to slow down the Gaels. Chattanooga did not shoot well in their first game, netting just 27% of their shots against USC. The Gaels barely scraped away with a 7 point win against Towson, who should not be able to hang with them.
Despite shooting over 40% from the field, Saint Mary’s was almost beaten at home, and I expect the team as a whole to take a step back this season without Aidan Mahaney. I trust Chattanooga’s defense to come to play in this matchup on the road, causing this game to stay under. I also lean with the Mocs to cover the 15 in this low scoring game.
