Of the 352 men’s basketball programs that are currently eligible to play in the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament, 36 have never experienced the joy of punching their ticket to the Big Dance. Stetson, who faces Jacksonville tonight in the ASUN Tournament semifinals, is two wins away from changing that.
Jacksonville vs Stetson Game Information
- Matchup: #10 Jacksonville Dolphins (16-16, 13-16 ATS, 16-13 O/U) vs #2 Stetson Hatters (20-12, 16-13 ATS, 11-18 O/U)
- Date: Thursday, March 7, 2024
- Time: 7:00 pm ET
- Broadcast: ESPN+
To reach Sunday’s championship game, where they could face another potential first-timer in North Alabama, the Hatters must see off the Dolphins, who upset #1 seed Eastern Kentucky in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.
While Jacksonville has a bit more March Madness history than Stetson, none of it is recent. JU famously reached the national championship game in 1970, led by future Hall of Famer Artis Gilmore, but the Dolphins haven’t gone dancing since 1986.
Stetson won both meetings between the two Sunshine State foes in the regular season, but will the third time be the charm for Jacksonville?

Jacksonville vs Stetson Prediction and Picks
Jacksonville vs Stetson Betting Analysis and Prediction
To date, Stetson is 13-2 at home this season. They lost 77-70 to Chicago State in a non-conference matchup on January 15, and they fell 83-75 to Queens University in a conference contest on February 22.
That home ledger includes a 71-55 win over Jacksonville on January 6. In the other matchup this season, the Hatters handled the Dolphins 86-73 a mere nine days ago.
JU ended the regular season with four losses in five games, but the conference tournament has brought the opportunity to turn over a new leaf and make a run at a trip to the Big Dance. They have embraced the opportunity with both hands, winning 92-86 over #9 seed Kennesaw State to open the tournament then downing the regular season champions by two points in their own building on Tuesday.
Can they deliver more disappointment in DeLand? Though Jacksonville hasn’t gone dancing in nearly 40 years, there is certainly more pressure to perform on Stetson. However, I expect the Hatters to handle that pressure just fine and move on to Sunday’s championship game (2:00 pm ET, ESPN2), where they will face either #4 seed Austin Peay or #6 seed North Alabama.
Jacksonville vs Stetson Betting Picks
Stetson -6 & Jacksonville/Stetson over 135.5
Stetson finished the regular season by making only 1 of 9 (11.1%) from three in a loss at North Florida, then struggled from outside against Queens, making only 7 of 25 (28.0%).
Why is this relevant? The Hatters, who are shooting 36.1% from outside this season, have not failed to hit at least 36.0% of their threes in three consecutive games at any point this season.
When shooting at least 36.0% from three, the Hatters are 16-4 this season, with 13 of those wins coming by seven or more points. When falling short of that number, they have lost eight of 12 games.
In their two regular season wins over Jacksonville, Stetson shot 42.3% (11 of 26) and 48.1% (13 of 27).
When JU has allowed an opponent to shoot 36.0% or better from three this season, they are 4-12, including 2-10 against ASUN foes.
I expect a better night from outside for Jalen Blackmon (21.1 PPG, 39.0% 3PT) and Alec Oglesby (11.0 PPG, 39.8% 3PT), who were 1 of 9 and 1 of 5, respectively, from three against Queens.
If both of Stetson’s top three-point threats are more on target tonight, Jacksonville will find it hard to pull off the upset, even if Robert McCray V (17.8 PPG) has another big game.
