Green Bay vs Oklahoma State Breakdown
This game has been circled since May—why? That’s when Green Bay hired sports media personality and former Oklahoma State guard Doug Gottlieb. While it might seem like just a former player following his passion as a full-time Division 1 coach, there’s more to consider. Gottlieb is still hosting his FOX Sports Radio show five days a week while coaching, raising questions about how serious the Green Bay program can be with a head coach juggling multiple obligations.
A Fresh Look in Green Bay
This Phoenix squad will be completely revamped, featuring 13 new players and only one returning starter from last season: redshirt junior guard Preston Ruedinger. He led the team with 8.4 points and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 36.6% from three-point range. Green Bay also welcomes back Foster Wonders, who recorded 7.8 points per game and shot 38.6% from beyond the arc. Another key addition is Isaiah Miranda, a former Oklahoma State recruit and top-150 prospect in 2022. They also added Donovan Santoro, who came off the bench for Providence last season.
Not-So-Slow Pokes
Oklahoma State also hired a new coach this offseason: former Western Kentucky and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi head coach Steve Lutz. Over the past four years, Lutz has amassed a 69-35 record, including a perfect 8-0 in conference tournament play. His teams are known for their fast-paced, hard-nosed style. Former Western Kentucky guard Brandon Newman followed Lutz to Oklahoma State, averaging 10.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals last season.
The Cowboys return leading scorer Bryce Thompson, who averaged 11.6 points while shooting 34.4% from three, despite being limited to 18 games due to injury. Jamyron Keller also returns after averaging 6.5 points per game last year.
Advanced Metrics
Green Bay is ranked 324th according to Haslametrics, while Oklahoma State is comfortably inside the top 100 at 86. As the home team, the Cowboys should dictate the pace, forcing Green Bay out of its comfort zone and into a faster tempo. Oklahoma State’s defensive intensity will be key; while many high-paced teams focus on scoring, Lutz’s squads typically excel defensively. With questions about how committed this Green Bay team will be under their radio personality head coach, it will be intriguing to see how this unfolds in game one. I’ll be backing the Cowboys, even amidst the welcome-home festivities for Gottlieb.
