Fresno State vs San Diego State Basketball Prediction & Picks: Will the Aztecs Impress Against the Bulldogs?

Following a huge road upset of Gonzaga, San Diego State will look to avoid being on the wrong end of an upset tonight as they begin Mountain West Conference play against visiting Fresno State (10:30 pm ET, FS1).

The Aztecs (11-2) went into Spokane this past Friday and left with an 84-74 win over the Bulldogs, who were ranked 13th in last week’s AP poll. In the win, SDSU was led by Reese Waters (22 points, five rebounds), Jaedon LeDee (20 points, seven rebounds, three assists), and Darrion Trammell (17 points).

The victory wasn’t enough to catapult the Aztecs into the national rankings, as they come in 26th in this week’s AP poll and 27th in the Coaches poll. But if they can take care of business against Fresno State tonight and UNLV on Saturday afternoon (4:00 pm ET, CBS), there’s a high possibility that they will be ranked when they visit San Jose State next Tuesday (11:00 pm ET, CBS Sports Network).

While San Diego State was the preseason favorite to win a fourth Mountain West regular season title in five seasons after sweeping the regular season and tournament titles last season, Fresno State was picked to finish eighth, ahead of only Utah State, Wyoming, and Air Force.

While the Aggies, who are 13-1 under first-year coach Danny Sprinkle and the bushel of transfers he brought in, the Bulldogs (7-6) have been more or less as expected thus far.

There’s nothing in their body of work to this point that gives me reason to believe that Fresno State will seriously challenge San Diego State tonight, so let’s get that part out of the way right now.

Against the three best teams they played in non-conference play, the Bulldogs were battered and fried by James Madison (95-64) at the Cancun Challenge, crushed by BYU (85-56) in Salt Lake City, and taken out by 20 at San Francisco (77-57).

San Diego State lost at BYU by nine, but I don’t think there is a massive gap between the Aztecs and the 12-1 Cougars, who are ranked 12th this week. And I think they will dispatch the Bulldogs in much the same way that BYU and James Madison did.
