DePaul vs St. John’s Predictions
One of the more intriguing games on tonight’s college slate, 8-2 St. John’s hosts 8-2 DePaul. The Blue Demons have been one of the most talked-about teams this season, but there is no clear way to gauge how good they truly are. They have been an analytics darling, despite having the 39th easiest schedule in the country.
DePaul has played just one road game, a 76-62 loss to Texas Tech on December 4th. While they did not perform terribly, there were both positive and negative moments. Their most troubling performance came after that loss, when they hosted Providence last Tuesday. The offense appeared flat and out of sync, and given their heavy reliance on the three-point shot—ranked seventh in the country for three-point rate—any struggles in that area were especially noticeable.
There is little value in analyzing DePaul’s offensive stats, as they are inflated from playing six teams ranked in the 200s-300s range, all at home. They have only been truly tested twice this season, and in their last three games, they have shown vulnerabilities against stronger opponents.
In their toughest test yet, the Blue Demons will face a St. John’s team that is well-rested after a win over Bryant. The Red Storm will look to push the pace, forcing DePaul to match their tempo. St. John’s boasts a top-30 offense and defense, ranking inside the top 60 in eFG% defense, turnover defense, offensive rebounding, block percentage defense, two-point offense, and defense. With one of the toughest schedules in the country, having faced teams like New Mexico, Baylor, Virginia, Georgia, and Kansas State, the Red Storm is well-conditioned and battle-tested. DePaul is in for one of their biggest tests of the season, and I see them falling short.
Give me the Red Storm.
