After five fruitless seasons under Fred Hoiberg, will this be the season that Nebraska has a breakthrough? The Cornhuskers have a chance to pick up a huge resume-building win today as they host in-state rival Creighton (4:00 pm ET, FS1).
The Huskers (7-0) haven’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2014, which is their only March Madness appearance in the last two and a half decades. But a win over the #15 Bluejays (6-1) will be a big feather in the cap for their hopes to return to the biggest stage in college basketball.
It would be their second straight win over Creighton, following a 63-53 win over the then-#7 Bluejays in Omaha last December. But they weren’t able to make the most of that victory, as it would be their only one against ranked opposition all season on the way to finishing 16-16 overall and 9-11 in the Big Ten.

But that finish was the Huskers’ best in Hoiberg’s five seasons in Lincoln, and while their toughest early test has come against Duquesne, this team appears to have some high potential.
Confidence will be even higher with a win over the Bluejays, who bounced back from a surprising blowout loss against Colorado State with a 79-65 win at Oklahoma State on Thursday.

Offensive Improvement Fueling Hot Start for Nebraska
The last time Nebraska averaged 75 or more points per game was the 1995-96 season, when current Los Angeles Clippers coach Tyronn Lue was a freshman on a team that averaged 80.2 PPG and defeated St. Joseph’s to win the NIT that season.
Not scoring enough is not the only reason why the Huskers have had such little success since winning that NIT title and making five March Madness appearances in the 1990s under Danny Nee, but this year’s team looks to have the kind of firepower that could bring a lot of wins.
Along with returnees Juwan Gary and Keisei “The Japanese Steph Curry” Tominaga, Hoiberg added transfers Rienk Mast (Bradley), Brice Williams (Charlotte), and Josiah Allick (New Mexico).
Entering today’s game against Creighton, those five players are Nebraska’s top five scorers, and they are why the Huskers are averaging 81.6 PPG through seven games and have scored 80+ points in all but one game.
In last season’s win over the Bluejays, Gary was 5 of 5 from the field and had 12 points and nine rebounds, one of several solid early-season efforts from the Alabama transfer before he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury against Illinois on January 10.
Gary missed the first three games this season, but he hit the ground running in his return to action against Stony Brook on November 15 and is averaging 16.0 PPG and 7.0 RPG.
Can things keep rolling against Creighton? The Huskers have scored 75 or more points against the Bluejays only twice in the last 25 meetings, in a 94-75 win in Lincoln the 2018-19 season and a 95-76 loss in Omaha the following season.

Creighton vs Nebraska Prediction and Picks
Prediction: Nebraska to win
Picks: Nebraska +4 (-105 at Bovada) & Nebraska team total over 72.5 points (-120 at Bovada)
I like the makeup of this Nebraska team, and I think they will get a win that could prove to be very valuable in three months’ time.
