The American Conference Tournament starts Wednesday, March 13th at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, and although FAU is a clear favorite, this could be anyone’s tournament.
Memphis and South Florida are both teams that are projected to be out if they get bounced in the first round. USF won the regular season, but the Owls of FAU are certainly more of a tournament caliber team.
Essentially everyone in this conference is fighting for a shot at the Big Dance, so motivation will come from all over.
Will the favorites play spoilers and take the automatic bid?
Let’s take a look at the bracket.
American Conference Tournament Bracket
Like I said, nearly everyone besides FAU is fighting for their life.
Let’s check out the odds and then find some dark horses.

This team is talented. Seriously they have some freak athletes on this team. Memphis handled business during their non-conference schedule, which included wins over Virginia, Texas A&M, Clemson and Arkansas. They struggled during American Conference play, but with their full season resume, they have a shot at dancing.
Memphis won 4 of their L5 to end the season and could keep the momentum rolling into the Big Dance.
I love them to beat UAB in the quarterfinals, with whom they split the season series both winning at home.
Then I pray, that the Tigers see South Florida in the semifinals. The Bulls upset the Tigers in Memphis by 1 point earlier this season. The Tigers were up 15 points at halftime, and they literally led the entire game until the final 4 seconds when South Florida hit a free throw to win the game.
The Tigers will get their revenge and then possibly catch a sleeping FAU team in the finals.
For +450, I think the Tigers are worth a stab.
American Conference Tournament Dark Horse Picks
If I had to sprinkle on a couple long-shots, here’s where I would go.
SMU (+475)
North Texas (+850)
These are two teams that pretty much need the automatic qualifying bid to go dancing, and I think they could both be a Dark Horse in this American Conference.
North Texas certainly has the capabilities to upset Florida Atlantic, especially since they are already dancing. They lost a heartbreaker at FAU earlier this season by just 3 points, and I trust their defense to stop the Owls.
I am not worried about 3 seeded Charlotte at all in this tournament, and expect SMU to get to the Semifinals.
The Mustangs lost to FAU by 10 on the road, and with revenge at a neutral site, I think they could pull it off.
