#6 Purdue vs #15 Marquette Prediction
Tonight’s game could be the best of the week in college basketball, as No. 6 Purdue faces No. 15 Marquette at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.
Purdue is coming off a big 87-78 win over No. 8 Alabama on Friday, while Marquette just picked up a road win over Maryland. Both teams are fresh off impressive victories—so which one is primed for a letdown, and which one is ready to roll? If Purdue had lost on Friday, I’d be backing them today. But after such a huge win at home, it’s hard to ignore the emotional high they will be riding. When the line opened at -2.5, I had to go with the Golden Eagles. Playing back-to-back games against top-15 teams is no easy feat.
Marquette is an intriguing team. Despite losing star guard Tyler Kolek and leading rebounder Oso Ighodaro, they have not added any transfers this season. However, they still have Kam Jones, who led the team in scoring last year and is now averaging 24 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. With so much continuity, this familiarity could prove to be a dangerous advantage early in the season.
The Golden Eagles are a fast-paced team—though not as quick as Alabama—yet still fast enough to throw off Purdue’s slower style of play. Defensively, they’re elite, forcing turnovers at a high rate. Offensively, they’re efficient inside, ranking 30th in two-point percentage and 24th in offensive turnover percentage after four games.
What makes Marquette especially tough is their ball handling—they don’t make many mistakes. Purdue, on the other hand, has struggled to force turnovers early this season, ranking 296th in turnover rate (per Bart Torvik).
Playing back-to-back games against high-level competition is a challenge for any team, and I think it’s going to catch up with Purdue here. Given the situation, it’s hard to ignore Marquette, even if it feels a bit risky. As a situational bettor, the Golden Eagles just make the most sense to me in this spot.
Give me Marquette to win and cover.
Bet: Marquette (-4.5) on BetOnline
