#6 Houston vs #9 Alabama Prediction
The Players Era Tournament tips off tonight in Las Vegas with a marquee matchup between No. 6 Houston and No. 9 Alabama. This clash of styles features Houston’s deliberate, defensive approach against Alabama’s fast-paced, high-scoring offense—a true battle of opposites.
Alabama’s Gameplan
Many expect a low-scoring affair, but don’t count on it staying slow. Nate Oats will have Alabama pushing the tempo to exploit Houston’s biggest weakness: keeping up with high-paced teams. While the Cougars boast one of the nation’s top defenses, their discomfort with fast play gives Alabama a clear game plan—set the pace early and force Houston out of their rhythm. If the Crimson Tide offense finds its groove, it could overwhelm Houston from the start.
According to Bart Torvik, Alabama ranks third in adjusted offensive efficiency, top five in two-point offense, and top 50 in both effective field goal percentage and turnover percentage. They’re also 60th in free throw rate, consistently drawing fouls and getting to the line.
With that in mind, Alabama’s first-half team total of 34.5 is tempting. The Tide have exceeded this number in every game this season. Even against McNeese State—a slow, defensive-minded team ranked 272nd in tempo and 109th in defensive efficiency—they cleared it. The closest comparison Houston has faced this season is Auburn, who scored 28 points in the first half. Alabama’s offense averages well over 34.5 points per half, regardless of venue.
If Alabama sets the tone early and controls the pace, they’re not only primed to cover but could take down one of the nation’s top teams.
