Michigan State is peaking at the perfect time, entering the Big Ten Tournament as one of the hottest teams in the country. With an elite defense, key road wins, and a favorable path, the Spartans are built for a deep run. At better than 2/1 odds, they are a strong bet to win both the conference tournament and regular season crown.

Michigan State’s Momentum Sets Them Up for a Big Ten Title

Do the Spartans have what it takes to take home the Big Ten Tournament?

Remember what I said in the Big East Tournament write-up about only taking the chalk if it feels like a guarantee? The way Michigan State has been playing, it almost feels like destiny for them to win both the Big Ten regular season and conference tournament.
Since February 1, the Spartans have been the ninth-best team in the country, per Bart Torvik. They boast the third-ranked defense, including the third-best three-point defense, while complementing it with the 37th-best offense. They also rank 47th in offensive rebounding and sit inside the top 100 in free throw rate.
Since their loss to Indiana on February 11, Michigan State has gone on a seven-game tear, taking down some of the conference’s top teams—Illinois, Michigan, and Maryland—all on the road. Many, myself included, expected those teams to challenge them, but the Spartans have only strengthened their case, closing the season on a dominant run.
The Path
Three wins separate Michigan State from the Big Ten Tournament title. First, they will face the winner of Oregon vs. Indiana, two of the conference’s more inconsistent teams. Next, they will likely meet Wisconsin or UCLA before a potential championship showdown against Illinois, Maryland, Purdue, or Michigan. The Spartans are 6-0 against those four and 8-2 against all eight teams mentioned.
At 2/1 odds, we are getting one of the hottest teams in the country, riding serious momentum, with five days of rest before taking on teams they have already beaten. With a favorable path to the championship, the Spartans are in prime position to dominate.
Big Ten Prediction: Michigan State (+250) on BetOnline
