The Omaha Mavericks have been a thrilling story all season, but reality is about to hit. St. John’s boasts the nation’s top road defense and will smother an untested Omaha offense. This game will not be about excitement—it will be about missed shots and defensive dominance.

#15 Omaha vs #2 St. John’s Best Bet
The Omaha Mavericks have been one of the most exciting stories this season. Their garbage can beatdowns after wins have stolen my heart. However, it is time to face a real opponent. A St. John’s team that plays better defense on the road and, regardless of their pace, will lock down their opponent.
Allowing only 65.2 points per game on the road this season, the Red Storm have the number one road defense in the country. They excel in effective field goal percentage, turnover defense, and two-point defense, all ranked in the top five nationally. Since February 1, St. John’s has had the second-best defense in the country, per Bart Torvik.
During that same span, Omaha has had the 57th-best offense in the country. This is while not playing a top-100 team since December 15, when they lost to Iowa State 83-51.
This team is in for a rude awakening in the first round of the tournament. The Red Storm should treat this as a tune-up game and focus entirely on preparing for the second round. A reminder—St. John’s just held Creighton to 67 points in the Big East Conference Championship. Get ready to love missed shots.
