We are a little over a week from one of the most anticipated debuts in NBA history. A week from Wednesday, Victor Wembanyama, the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, will make his regular season debut with the San Antonio Spurs as they host the Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and the Dallas Mavericks at the Frost Bank Center (9:30 pm ET, ESPN).
For the third time in their history, the Spurs had the first overall pick in the draft this year. That gave them the opportunity to select Wembanyama, who is considered by many to be the most highly touted NBA prospect in LeBron James two decades ago.
Along with the resulting high expectations, there is also the added weight of the legendary status of the Spurs’ other two #1 picks, David Robinson and Tim Duncan, who are considered two of the very best big men in NBA history.
Obviously both Wemby and the Spurs, who went 22-60 last season, must crawl before they walk back to the upper echelon of the NBA, but what does year one hold for the French phenom?
With his first regular season game looming, Wembanyama sits atop the NBA Rookie of the Year odds. He holds the edge over Portland’s Scoot Henderson and Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren, who is making a delayed debut after missing all of last season due to a foot injury.

Will Wembanyama Fare in Year One?
Wemby has already made headlines and highlights in the preseason, which only serves to increase the excitement and anticipation surrounding the upcoming season and years to come.
Projecting what he will do this season is impossible, not only because he is an international player, but more so because he is such a unique player that there is no standard to compare him to.
