Luka Likely to Miss Second Straight Game Due to Calf Strain

After suffering a left calf injury in the regular season finale against the San Antonio Spurs, Doncic was not able to play in Game 1, a 99-93 win for the Jazz.

As it stands, he will also be unavailable for Game 2.

Without their best player, the Mavs had a pretty rough night offensively, other than a prolific night at the stripe.

They were 26 of 34 from the free-throw line, but they were 29 of 78 overall from the field (38.2 percent) and 9 of 32 from three (28.1 percent).

Starting guards Spencer Dinwiddie (6 of 15 FG, 0 of 4 3PT) and Jalen Brunson (9 of 24 FG, 1-3 3PT) combined to make only 38.5 percent of their shots, which they can’t afford to replicate if the Mavs are to even up the series.

Still, Dallas stayed in the game and trailed by just one inside the final two minutes. But after failing to convert a chance to take the lead, they allowed an offensive rebound on the Jazz’s next possession. Moments later, Royce O’Neale hit a huge three to put the Jazz up by four, and the Mavs did not respond.

There was certainly a lot in the Mavs’ Game 1 performance to be encouraged by. In the regular season, the Jazz were sixth in the NBA in field goal percentage (47.1 percent) and 11th in three-point shooting (36.0 percent).

But the Mavs held them to 43.4 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from three, with Donovan Mitchell making only 10 of his 29 shots.

And the resilience that the Mavs showed in rallying to make it a one-point game after trailing by 11 halfway through the fourth quarter is something to carry into tonight’s game.

When you remove someone who averaged 28.4 PPG, 9.1 RPG, and 8.7 APG in the regular season, it is going to have a pretty significant effect. NBA MVP candidates and players of his level don’t exactly grow on trees.

But where many other playoff teams have a notable second star that can carry them if the main man is injured or having a rough game, the Mavs don’t quite have that.

Brunson has had some big games, but he has more games with single digits than 25-point games this season. Yes, he had 24 points in Game 1, but it was not an efficient 24 points at all.

Dinwiddie can fill it up from time to time as well and averaged 20.6 PPG for the Brooklyn Nets just two seasons ago. He is meant to be a complementary piece on this team, but he will need to be more with Doncic absent.

On the positive side, I don’t see either team shooting as poorly as they both did in Game 1. And I do expect the Mavs to put up another serious fight like they did in Game 1.

But in the end, it is unlikely to be enough to keep them from having to hit the road in an 0-2 hole.

Best Prop Pick for Jazz vs. Mavs: Rudy Gobert OVER 29.5 Points + Rebounds (-106 at BetOnline Sportsbook)

In Game 1, Gobert had 17 rebounds to help the Jazz have a +19 advantage on the boards, but he only attempted one shot and had just five points.

If Gobert has another 15+ rebound performance, he won’t need to reach his season average (15.6 PPG) for this play to hit. And the Jazz don’t necessarily even need him to score much to win.

But expect him to be more of a factor in the scoring department tonight, along with having another big game on the boards. In the regular season, he had back-to-back single-digit games only once.
