Timberwolves vs Mavericks NBA Predictions & Picks (1/22)

With the way these teams have been performing recently, both sides can use a win tonight.

The Timberwolves are heading to the Lone Star State with an abysmal 2-4 SU record in their last six games. That includes back-to-back losses in their last two outings, most recently falling 108-106 to the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday. Minnesota led by as many as 16 points but couldn’t hold on for the victory after being outscored 65-52 in the second half.

Conversely, the injury-riddled Mavericks haven’t been doing much better. After a 20-11 start to the season, the Mavs have dropped nine of their last 12 outings, including a 110-105 loss to the Charlotte Hornets two nights ago. Even Jason Kidd’s team is back at home now, it’s worth noting that Dallas is 3-4 SU in its last seven games at American Airlines Center.

Unfortunately, the Mavericks’ injury situation hasn’t improved much. Luka Doncic (calf), Dante Exum (wrist), Jaden Hardy (ankle), and Dwight Powell (hip) have all been ruled out of tonight’s showdown against the Lakers. Additionally, Naji Marshall (illness), Quentin Grimes (back), Dereck Lively II (ankle), and Klay Thompson (ankle) are questionable to suit up.

Since the start of the 2022-23 season, the Mavericks are only 19-30 SU when Luka Doncic doesn’t play. 

The Timberwolves, meanwhile, are the healthier squad as Donte DiVincenzo (toe) and Terrence Shannon Jr. (foot) will be their only absentees.

Let’s also not forget that the Timberwolves emerged with a 105-99 win over the Mavericks when they last visited American Airlines Center on Dec. 25. It was just business as usual for a Dallas team that is now 4-2 SU in its last six road games vs. Dallas, holding the latter to an average of just 108.7 PPG.

For reference, the T-Wolves are surrendering 108.0 PPG (5th) this season.

Considering the above, let’s take the Timberwolves to win AND cover the spread tonight. They’ve already proven they can handle the Mavericks in Dallas, which they just did less than one month ago. The Timberwolves are also 4-1 ATS in their last five road games overall whereas the Mavs covered the spread once in their six previous games.

With the Mavericks also being 2-8 ATS in their last 10 Western Conference tilts combined with their injury situation, the Timberwolves shouldn’t struggle to win by three-plus points.

Best Timberwolves vs Mavericks NBA Player Prop Bet (1/22)

After how he performed last month against the Mavericks, I’m going with Julius Randle o1.5 threes made (-125 on Bovada) as this game’s best player prop.

It isn’t a secret that Randle hasn’t been shooting the ball lately, averaging 0.8 threes made on 19.6% shooting in his last 13 games. So, why do I like this prop? Well, for starters, the 30-year-old power forward shot 3-of-5 (60.0%) from deep against Dallas on Christmas Day. With that performance, the Over is now 6-0 in his last six clashes with the Mavericks as he’s averaged 3.2 threes made on 46.3% shooting.

That’s without even bringing up how the Mavs are allowing the most three-pointers to PFs in the NBA this season. All slumps eventually end one day, and I feel like it’s finally time for Randle to find some perimeter success this evening.
