Timberwolves vs Lakers NBA Opening Night Predictions & Picks (10/22)
These two Western Conference powerhouses begin their march to a potential NBA Championship run tonight. The Timberwolves open the 2024-25 campaign with BetOnline’s seventh-best odds to win the NBA Finals (+1100) while the Lakers are tied for 11th at +3300.
The Timberwolves will look to hit the ground running after losing in five games to the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Finals. They’ll look a bit different this time around, though, after the T-Wolves acquired Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker in a blockbuster trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks less than a month ago.
Of course, the Timberwolves also have Anthony Edwards, who averaged 25.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists last season before finishing seventh in NBA voting. Rudy Robert also had a solid 2023-24 season that saw him named Defensive Player of the Year for the fourth time in his career.
Will Anthony Edwards take his game to the next level this season?
The Lakers, meanwhile, are sporting a similar group to the one they rostered last season. They didn’t add many players after suffering a first-round elimination to the Denver Nuggets, only adding bringing in rookies Dalton Knecht and Bronny James. It also remains to be seen how J.J. Redick handles his first-ever NBA head coaching gig.
Of course, any success the Lakers will see this season will live and die with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Even though he’s turning 40 in a few months, James still averaged 25.7 PTS/7.3 REB/8.3 AST last season while Anthony Davis put up 24.7 points and 12.6 rebounds en route to another All-NBA appearance.
As far as the recent history between these teams goes, the Timberwolves are 5-3 SU in their last eight games against the Lakers, which includes three victories in four meetings last season. Conversely, Los Angeles is 3-1 SU in its last four home games against Minnesota, leaving time to tell if that trend continues this evening.
Can the Lakers successfully defend their home court against the Timberwolves tonight?
I could see this game going either way, however, I’m taking the Timberwolves to squeak out the win. They were the better team last season and have had the Lakers’ number recently. It’s also hard to trust Los Angeles when we haven’t seen what Redick can do behind the bench. While he could surprise some viewers tonight in a good way, his debut could also be a disaster if he can’t handle the pressure.
Having said that, I’m taking the Under on the 220.5-point total tonight. Last season’s four Timberwolves-Lakers matchups averaged 216 points with three of those encounters finishing below tonight’s projected total. With the Under also being 17-15 when Los Angeles has been the home underdog since the start of the 2022-23 campaign.
Throw in the fact that the Timberwolves owned the NBA’s top defense last season and it’s easy to imagine that we won’t see a ton of points tonight.

Best Timberwolves vs Lakers Player Prop (10/22)
For tonight’s best Timberwolves vs. Lakers player prop, I’m taking the Over on Anthony Edwards’ 26.5-point total (-114).
The 2023-24 NBA season was Edwards’ best to date, proven by his recording 27-plus points in 40 of his 79 regular-season appearances. He then went on to finish with the Over in nine of his 16 playoff games, averaging 27.6 points on .481/.400/.814 splits along the way.
The former Georgia product also averaged 27.3 points in four games vs. the Lakers last season, hitting the Over twice while finishing with no fewer than 25 points each time. In other words, I expect another strong showing from the Timberwolves’ best player at crypto.com Arena.
