The last time the Oklahoma City Thunder reached the second round of the NBA playoffs, Kevin Durant was in his last season in OKC. Tonight, the Thunder could lock up their first trip to the Western Conference semifinals since 2016 with a Game 4 win over the New Orleans Pelicans (8:30 pm ET, NBA TV).

After taking the first two games in Oklahoma City, the Thunder took full control of the series with a 106-85 win at the Smoothie King Center on Saturday. It was their second straight dominant victory following a 124-92 win in Game 2 last Wednesday.

The Pelicans have advanced to the second round only twice in eight previous playoff appearances, and they will exit swiftly once again barring a historic comeback.

It’s only the first round, and the competition will get tougher from there. But the Thunder have thus far played the way you would want to see a #1 seed play in the first round.

Perhaps the Pelicans would have put up more of a fight with a healthy Zion Williamson. Alas, we won’t get to find out how things might have gone had Zion not suffered a left hamstring strain in New Orleans’ NBA Play-In Tournament loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Even if the Pels can extend the series, a return will not happen.

So, any sort of rally will have to come with the guys that they have. That group isn’t offering any indication that a Game 5 is likely.

In the first 12 quarters of the series, the Pelicans have outscored the Thunder in just one quarter, the fourth quarter of their 94-92 loss in Game 1.

That is rather bleak, and so is shooting 40.1% (102 of 253) in the first three games of the series. In comparison, the Thunder are shooting exactly 50.0% (123 of 246) from the field in the series. New Orleans is shooting 27.8% (27 of 97) from three, while Oklahoma City is shooting 42.3% (42 of 97) from three.

The Thunder are the #1 seed in the Western Conference in part to being rather good at following one win with another. Following the Game 3 win, OKC is now 42-17 SU (71.3%, 2^nd in the NBA) and 35-24 ATS (59.3%, 3^rd in the NBA) in games following a win.

The Pelicans are one of the NBA’s best teams in covering in games following a loss (21-14-1, 60.0%, 6^th in the NBA), but with what they have shown so far, there’s no reason to believe that they will fend off the brooms tonight.
