After being on the receiving end of a Game 1 rout, the Dallas Mavericks struck back against the Oklahoma City Thunder in a big way Thursday night to earn a split in OKC, perhaps tipping the scales ever so slightly in their favor heading into the next two games in Dallas.

In Game 1, the Western Conference’s #1 seed came out swinging hard and hammered Dallas by 22 points. But just as they did in the first round against the Los Angeles Clippers, the Mavericks bounced back from a Game 1 loss with a Game 2 win, outlasting the Thunder 119-110 to take the series back to Dallas all square at a win apiece.

Only two teams in the NBA have won over 50% of the time as a road underdog this season. The New Orleans Pelicans (13-9, 59.1%) may finish atop the league in that category even though they are done for the season, though the Minnesota Timberwolves (11-10, 52.4%) could overhaul them.

Behind the Pelicans, Timberwolves, and Phoenix Suns (8-9, 47.1%) are the Thunder, who are 7-8 SU (46.7%) and 7-7-1 ATS (50.0%, tied for 19^th in the NBA) in games as a road underdog.

They may not rank very well against the spread in that category or in games following a loss (12-12-1, 50.0%, tied for 14^th), but they are 17-8 SU (68.0%) in games following a loss, which ranks fifth behind the Timberwolves, Celtics, Nuggets, and Knicks.

Dallas does rank respectably in games following a win, as they are 32-22 SU (59.3%, 8^th) and 30-24 ATS (55.6%, also 8^th) in that scenario.

However, the numbers are a bit less positive as a home favorite, as they rank 16^th in win percentage in those games and ninth in covering in those games.

The Mavericks should love where they are after their Game 2 win, though the Thunder are still the favorite to win the series, even if by a small margin. At BetOnline, Oklahoma City has -119 odds to win the series, with Dallas at -101 entering this afternoon’s matchup. But I don’t think OKC will panic at all even if Thursday night’s loss represents a missed opportunity.
