It’s a light schedule around the NBA tonight as only three matchups are slated for Tuesday, Jan. 16. Having said that, one of the clashes is a massive one as Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid go head-to-head when the Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers collide at 7:30 p.m. ET.
The Nuggets head into tonight’s contest as winners of three of their last four games, most recently picking up a 117-109 win over the Indiana Pacers on Sunday. Meanwhile, the 76ers aim for a third straight win after Joel Embiid’s 41-point effort lifted them to a 124-115 victory against the Houston Rockets on MLK Day.
To the surprise of few, these teams are among the top contenders to hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy in the spring. Denver currently holds the second-best odds (+425) to win the 2023-24 NBA Finals while Philadelphia is tied for fifth (+1200), per Bovada’s future odds.
In the meantime, let’s get into my Nuggets vs 76ers predictions and best bets.

Nuggets vs 76ers Prediction & Pick (1/16)
Fans have every right to be excited about the impending meeting between two of the NBA’s best players — especially went they account for the last three NBA MVP winners.
Unsurprisingly, Embiid and Jokic are dominating the league again this season. Embiid is averaging the most points in the NBA for the third straight season, operating on a 34.9 PPG clip with 64.8% true shooting while also adding 11.7 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 2.0 blocks, and 1.1 steals.
On the other side, Jokic continues to do it all. The 28-year-old Serbian superstar continues to do a bit of everything, averaging 25.5 PTS/11.8 REB/9.3 AST on .582/.350/.819 shooting splits through 40 games.
Both men’s efforts have resulted in them being two of the top picks to be named the 2023-24 NBA MVP as Jokic is currently Bovada’s frontrunner (+150) while Embiid currently sits fourth (+700).
Nikola Jokic (above) has been playing at an MVP level throughout the 2023-24 NBA season.
But regardless of who’s leading the NBA race at the moment, the head-to-head history between these two men belongs to Embiid, who is 5-2 SU in seven previous matchups against Jokic. Embiid averaged 25.7 PTS/11.9 REB/3.6 AST while shooting 45.3% from the field while Jokic averaged 21.9 PTS/8.9 REB/7.4 AST with a 63.3 FG%.
Nevertheless, basketball is a team sport so this game could come down to more than just Jokic vs. Embiid. The Nuggets are on fire at the moment, going 11-3 SU in their last 14 games while also only losing once in their last seven road outings. As for the 76ers, they’ve dropped four of their last seven games but have won two in a row, leaving time to tell if that momentum continues tonight.
Even without a ton of recent success, though, the 76ers are still one of the best home teams in the NBA, going 15-6 SU (15-6 ATS) at Wells Fargo Center. While the Nuggets have found recent success away from home, they’ve still only covered the spread in seven of 20 road outings thus far.
Furthermore, the Nuggets are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 meetings with the 76ers while going 2-4 ATS over the last six trips to the City of Brotherly Love.

At the end of the day, it could be the Nuggets’ injury situation that does them in. Key players like Jokic (hip), Jamal Murray (knee), Michael Porter Jr. (knee), and Aaron Gordon (heel) are all questionable to play. Meanwhile, the 76ers’ injury report is made up of role players, meaning they’ll likely have all of their key players.
With that in mind, I’m taking Philadelphia to win tonight. The 76ers are healthier and extremely tough to beat at Wells Fargo Center, where the Nuggets haven’t had much luck lately. Denver has been playing great basketball lately, but all things must come to an end and if there’s a team capable of halting the current run, it’s Embiid & Co.
Let’s also take the Under on the 228.5-point total. The Under is 5-1 in Denver’s last six games against the Atlantic Division, as well as 4-1 in Philly’s last five at home. Additionally, the Under is 6-3 in the last nine Nuggets-76ers tilts, which averaged 213.1 PPG.
With both sides somewhat banged up at the moment, taking the Under is the safer bet tonight.

With the way he’s been playing lately, I like Joel Embiid to record over 11.5 rebounds as the best Nuggets vs. 76ers player prop.
Embiid has been averaging 11.7 RPG throughout the 2023-24 campaign and that number has jumped up to 12.4 RPG in his last eight outings — a span where he’s hit the Over five times. And even though he was just in action last night, don’t let that scare you away from this prop as he’s averaging 13.0 RPG in the second of back-to-back outings this season.
If that isn’t convincing enough, Embiid is averaging 12.8 RPG in his last six meetings against Jokic, even recording 18 boards in their last meeting on Jan. 28, 2023.
Proving that he can step up in big regular season games, I expect another huge night from Embiid.
