After being 5-1 on January 1, the Suns lost seven of their next 10 games. But they ended January on a positive note with consecutive wins. Last Thursday, they beat the Warriors handily, then followed that by dominating the fourth quarter against the Mavs in a comeback win on Saturday.

Devin Booker has missed the last four games due to a strained left hamstring, but he is listed as questionable for tonight’s game. With Booker out, Chris Paul has taken on a bigger offensive load, averaging 23.8 ppg in four games.

After a 19-point loss to Utah on Friday night, franchise cornerstone Luka Doncic called out his team’s lack of effort and heart. The next night, it looked like there might be a response, but things fell apart in the fourth quarter against the Suns. It was the Mavs’ fifth loss in a row and eighth in their last 10 games.

It’s still early enough to turn it around, but it will take more than Doncic for it to happen. The former NBA MVP betting favorite is the lone bright spot right now, however. In Friday’s game, he scored 25 points, but no one else scored more than 13. Then on Saturday night, he scored 29 on 12 of 22 shooting. But he was one of only three double-digit scorers for the Mavs.
