Lakers vs Spurs NBA Cup Predictions & Picks (11/15)
The NBA Emirates Cup continues as the Lakers and Spurs will play their first group-stage contests tonight.
The Lakers are heading to San Antonio with a fair chunk of momentum stemming from a three-game win streak, most recently picking up a 128-123 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies two nights ago. LeBron James led the way as he became the oldest player in NBA history to record three straight triple-doubles, finishing the night with 35 points, 14 assists, and 12 rebounds.
The win was another example of the Lakers playing well offensively as they’re now averaging 122.3 points with a plus-11.7 average scoring margin during their current heater.
Meanwhile, this evening’s encounter marks the end of the Spurs’ five-game homestand. Things have gone well thus far as San Antonio has gone 3-1 through the first four outings, last earning a 139-130 win against the Washington Wizards behind Victor Wembanyama’s career-high 50-point effort.
How will Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama follow up on his latest effort?
As far as the recent history goes between these franchises, the Lakers are 6-1 SU across their last seven meetings with the Spurs. And while Los Angeles has only won one of its first five home games this season, it’s worth mentioning that JJ Redick’s team also emerged victorious in eight of its 10 previous trips to Frost Bank Center.
The Spurs have played well at home so far, going 5-2 SU/4-3 ATS through seven outings. Having said that, it’s hard to ignore the lack of home success they’ve had against the Lakers in recent years.
If the Spurs want to stand tall, they must avoid another slow start. They’re only averaging 26.1 points per first quarter (26th) and 52.6 points per first half (26th) whereas the Lakers average 29.3 (8th) and 57.7 (7th), respectively.
That could be easier said than done, though. The Spurs have been receiving little offensive production from its lineup outside of Wembanyama and if the Lakers can figure out a way to shut down the second-year pro, it’ll be even harder for the home team to pull off the upset victory.
How will the Lakers’ best players — like LeBron James — step up in San Antonio tonight?
In what could be a competitive game, I have the Lakers grinding out the win. They’ve proven that they have the Spurs’ number and that’s even truer at Frost Bank Center. With slow starts constantly plaguing the Spurs to open the season, too, the Lakers might have a chance to put this game out of reach early on.
Both sides have struggled to cover the spread lately, though, so I’ll side with the Over on the 226.5-point total tonight. Not only is the Over a resounding 5-2 in the Spurs’ last seven games, but the Lakers’ last four outings averaged a combined 236.0 points per game. Los Angeles and San Antonio have also exceeded tonight’s projected total in five of their last six clashes at Frost Bank Center — including the last three in a row.
With both teams being defensively inconsistent, don’t be surprised if we see a lot of points in San Antonio.

Best Lakers vs Spurs NBA Player Prop (11/15)
As the NBA Emirates Cup rolls on, I’m naming Austin Reaves o17.5 total points (-113) as the best Lakers vs. Spurs player prop bet.
It’s been quite the season for Reaves, who’s averaging a career-high 18.6 points on .473/.357/.767 splits. The former Oklahoma product has hit the Over on this prop in seven of his 11 outings so far (63.6%), which includes tallying 18-plus points in each of his last four games. That trend has a decent shot at continuing considering how the Spurs are allowing the 10th-most points to shooting guards this season.
After scoring 22 points in his most recent visit to San Antonio last year, I’m feeling confident about this Reaves prop.
