The Grizzlies are coming off their first loss since Ja Morant’s return, falling 142-105 to the Denver Nuggets on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Clippers haven’t been in action since Dec. 26 when they picked up a 113-104 victory over the Charlotte Hornets behind James Harden’s game-high 29 points.

Grizzlies vs Clippers Prediction & Pick (Dec. 30)

Tonight’s contest marks the second Grizzlies-Clippers clash of the 2023-24 season. The two sides last met on Nov. 12 as Desmond Bane’s 27-point night played a key role in Memphis picking up the 105-101 victory over LA.

Interestingly enough, the Grizzlies are now 6-2 SU in their last eight encounters with the Clippers and have won three of their four most recent trips to crypto.com Arena.

It’ll be interesting to see if Memphis can keep that trend going. While they most recently beat the Clippers without Morant, there’s no guarantee that he’ll suit up tonight. The superstar point guard sat out of Thursday’s game due to an illness after leading the Grizzlies to four straight wins after serving his 25-game suspension.

Since making his 2023-24 debut, Morant is averaging 28.8 points, 8.5 assists, and 5.3 rebounds while shooting 50.6% from the floor. In other words, his presence will be missed if he can’t overcome his illness, as proven by the Grizzlies’ 6-20 SU record without him this season.

Meanwhile, it’ll be interesting to see if the Clippers can keep their momentum going. Tyron Lue’s team is an impressive 10-2 SU over the last 12 games and has won seven of their last eight outings at crypto.com Arena.

A lot of LA’s success this season stems from its perimeter shooting. Over the last 12 games, the Clippers are averaging 13.8 threes on 40.4% shooting, which ranks 10th- and third-best, respectively, in the NBA during that span.

The Grizzlies, on the other hand, own the worst three-point shooting percentage and rank ninth-worst in offense rebounds, meaning it isn’t even as if they can collect their own misses.

I’m inclined to stick with the Clippers tonight. They’re well-rested, whereas the Grizzlies are playing their third game in four nights. There also isn’t a guarantee that Morant will play and even if he does, he might not be at 100%. At the end of the day, LA is the safer pick.

Regardless of who is in the lineup, though, I expect a high-scoring contest. The Over is both 4-2 in Memphis’ last six road games, as well as 5-2 in LA’s seven previous overall. These teams have also exceeded their projected point total in six of their last eight meetings, averaging 235.3 points along the way.

The Clippers have one of the better first-half offenses in the NBA, averaging 58.1 points (14th) through the first two quarters. The Grizzlies, meanwhile, average 51.5 points in the first half (29th), which drops to a league-worst 49.9 on the road. If Morant doesn’t play or isn’t at 100%, it’s only going to be tougher for Memphis to win this race.
